According to multiple reports, the Capitals are set to name Adam Oates as their head coach Tuesday afternoon.

TSN’s Darren Dreger and Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos were the first to report that the 49-year-old Oates, who spent the past two seasons as an assistant with the New Jersey Devils, will become the 16th coach in Washington’s history.

Oates, who played parts of six seasons with the Capitals from 1997-2002, will be the fifth coach to be hired by General Manager George McPhee during his 15-year tenure. None of McPhee’s hires have had previous NHL head coaching experience.
