Found this to be quite a surprise:

Not shocking. I'm 99'% positive he announced this during or at the beginning of the season. I recall all the commentators talking about during national televised games.

" Aaron Rodgers was sacked 36 times all of last year when he re-wrote the passing record books. He’s been sacked 23 times already. When he’s protected in the pocket, the only thing that can stop the Packers are the refs."

Its quite alright. we have Pritchard taking over GM duties. Bird built this team up, now Pritchard needs to use that aggressive attitude in pursuing some more talent to put us in serious contention for a title.

    Jazz Hands!

"In my eyes, life is likened to christian ideology... its molded into three parts best described by the divine comedy; inferno, purgatorio and paradiso. You can live it in self loathing and pity, obscurity and ambiguity, or with beauty and elegance. Does that make the ideology truth? no, it makes it an irrelevent metaphor." ;p

    Huh?

He has always stated that he would wait and have a conversation with Simon after the season then decide.

Most people speculate that Bird wanted more money to work with in building a contender and it looks like Simon doesn't want to spend over the cap.

Those were rumors started by the media, which he denied.

The most recent theory is that Bird is retiring because his chronic back and shoulder issues have gotten worse. Just a month ago he was talking about getting a 3yr extension.

He retired from the NBA because of "back issues".
