    Game Scores (GmSc)

Why does Bill James include unearned runs in his Game Score (GmSc) formula? On the whole, how useful/effective is this metric in evaluating pitching (can either be James', or the revamped FanGraphs version)?

Jon Lester's last start -- which included 3 earned runs over 7 innings -- resulted in a 41 (James'). Pretty interesting, I think.

And I've heard there's a GmSc formula for hitting -- anyone familiar with it?

I don't think the stat is supposed to be viewed as a skill statistic, but rather a results statistic.

Highest Game Score since 1961 is 116, when Dean Chance on 6/6/64

    14 IP, 2 BB, 3 H, 12 K

There is a game score for hitters, but I can't find anything really on it.

Highest since World War II is Vern Law on 7/19/55, 18 innings 9 hits, 1 ER, 2 Runs allowed, 12 K, 2BB, 1 HR

    He got a 118

He faced 64 batters, and only gave up two extra base hits (a double and a homer)

The highest Game Score in 9 innings is Wood's 1998, 20 K game.

Do you know what James includes unearned runs in the formula?

Are you asking if I know that he does include it, or are you asking me why he includes it?

Because it isn't a skill stat, it's a results based statistic.
