To those that do not know mathematics it is difficult to get across a feeling as to the beauty, the deepest beauty of baseball. If you want to learn about baseball, to appreciate baseball, it is necessary to understand the language she speaks.

Allen Craig. I would like him to play a full year but this kid doesn't have downs. Consistency has been at his side the last two years.
Trumbo has a little more power. But, Craig is a better all-around hitter. He has been at every level.
So Craig had an 0 for 16 slump over four games before going 3 for 4 yesterday (just hit another double as I type this).
He is still over Trumbo in overall slash line, wOBA, and wRC+
I know RBI's mean nothing in a players value. But just kind of crazy.
Allen Craig is 46th in baseball this year in RBI's (44)
And is 254th in plate appearances (195)
But that's because he is carrying a .461 wOBA with runners in scoring position, so that helps.

I Believe Jeffy Is Being A Bit Of A Homer Here.
Trumbo Is The Answer.
Craig - GP AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS
2012 Regular Season 47 179 32 55 14 0 13 44 19 43 1 0 .307 .371 .603 .975
Trumbo -
2012 Regular Season 78 292 43 90 15 3 23 60 22 65 4 3 .308 .360 .616 .976
Doesn't get any closer than that.
How am I being a homer?
The last two years
Allen Craig - .306/.363/.569 - .399 wOBA, 156 wRC+ - 428 PA - 77 Runs Created
Mark Trumbo - .272/.315/.524 - .355 wOBA, 125 wRC+ - 894 PA - 129 Runs Created
The only way you pick Trumbo is because of PA, which Craig is bound to get.
Trumb is picked because everyone knows his name as this power hitter.
But Craig has been more valuable the last two years, but in less PA. Give him the rest of the year at the same rates he has maintained and he will continue to be ahead of Trumbo.
Not to mention, their entire minor league careers, Craig out hit Trumbo.
It isn't being a homer when the stats clearly support the vote.
This year, Trumbo has broken out, Craig has maintained his elite hitting level.
His .399 wOBA the last two years is 8th best in baseball (min 400 PA) as his 156 wRC+
That's as many PA as Mike Trout the last two years, and he will end this season with over 450 PA assuming he maintains his current health.

What is the point of counting last year for Trumbo? It was his rookie season, and he still hit 29 HR.
Craig wasn't that good in his first 114 AB as a rookie.
As of now, Trumbo is better and probably will be better in the future, however it is close.
Fine, if you want to just count this season, their numbers are basically identical.
Moving forward, I don't know how confident I am in Trumbo maintaing his current level of production.
I don't know many guys that can maintain a 25% HR/FB ratio, and while Craig has done that this year too, you can expect both to slip in that department.
I don't think Craig will be affected by that as much though.

These guys are actually completely different players.. Trumbo is an elite slugger with lethal power who is just learning to really "hit" and be patient. The more I watch Craig he strikes me as a polished "professional hitter" with some pop in the mold of a right handed Mark Grace ( with more power).

I think in the end, both of these guys will go down as better than everybody thought they would when this thread was created.
Trumbo continues to be awesome (what, five games in a row with a homer?), and Craig isn't letting up with more plate appearances (game winning hit last night).
