    Jays call Phillies about Hamels/Victorino

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Blue Jays have "engaged in dialogue" with the Phillies regarding Cole Hamels and Shane Victorino.
It's interesting timing, given that Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro noted Thursday that the team could be sellers at the trade deadline. But, Rosenthal cautions that "no trade is close" or "even likely" at this point, and that the Phillies are a long way from giving up on the season. While we don't anticipate them making any big deals anytime soon, if they're still floundering by midseason, trading potential free agents Hamels and Victorino becomes a viable option.

It's interesting, but nothing to get too excited about. Anthopoulos phone bill is ridiculously high according to many sources.

they should certianly entertian the idea of trading hamels, since it seems more and more likely he will leave.

Due diligence is all this is. And Brett Lawrie isn't going anywhere any time soon.

I realize it's not going to happen, but the Phillies need a young 3B. And I guarantee Ruben Amaro will demand him in any trade that involves Hamels, impending UFA or not.

and he'll likely soften if they ar eout of it come the deadline and he feels he cant resign him. sur elawrie would be great for the phillies, but less than that is better than him leaving and you getting nothing

Amaro can ask for any players he wants, but there's no way Toronto gives up Lawrie for a couple months of Hamels when they aren't even likely to make the playoffs. I fully expect Toronto to be calling the Cubs about Garza soon if they haven't already and any other team with a front end starter that might be available.

I very much doubt that he'd have so much tunnel-vision to make such lofty demands.

He'd likely ask for Lawrie as a starting point (doesn't hurt to ask... and get rejected), but if he was dealing with the Angels or the Nationals and wanted to make any deal (for example), he'd have to live with the fact that by no means are those teams trading their young studs that are already contributing at the major league level in Strasburg, Harper and Trout respectively.

Some players really are not going to get traded unless it's for a similar asset that fills a different role like the Pineda-Montero trade.

They did allegedly make that call right before spring training and the Cubs asking price was too high. There were similar reports linking Anthopoulos to inquiring about Gio Gonzalez and Mat Latos.

If there is a contract extension agreement in place before a trade, a Lawrie-Hamels swap would be very likely. If there isn't an extension in play, no way they get Lawrie.
