Kesler gets shoulder surgery - out for 6 months

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Vancouver Canucks center Ryan Kesler has undergone shoulder surgery, the team said Tuesday.

The Canucks expect the 27-year-old to be out up to six months, meaning he will likely miss the start of the regular season.

Kesler said after the Canucks were eliminated in the first round by the Los Angeles Kings that he had been playing with an undisclosed injury since February.

"After consultation with our team physicians following the playoffs, it was deemed that Ryan would require a procedure on his shoulder," Canucks president and general manager Mike Gillis said in a statement. "We expect a full recovery and determined this procedure would best serve the team's and Ryan's long-term goals."

Kesler had 22 goals and 27 assists in 77 games this season. It marked a drop-off from the 73 points (41 goals, 32 assists) he had in 2010-11 when the Canucks reached Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals.

Hopefully Gillis properly prepares this time. And Ryan needs to be smart about this. Regular season is meaningless in the grand scheme of things.

Agreed. What do you think would be a good plan for Gillis to deal with this? A second line C replacement but who and how? From within the lineup? Schroeder?

I don't know who he could get, but I don't think Schroder would be a good solution given how little AV would play him especially when Kesler gets back.

Here's what i just realized. Gillis knew Kesler was injured at the time of the Hodgson trade.... so, something just doesn't add up.

Top tier goalie on a team that has in the past resorted to Toronto Maple Leafs cast-offs? Boooooooo.

Coach takes you to top of the league two years in a row, and within one win of the Cup? #fireAV.

Selke winning centre hampered by a pretty serious injury? Trade him!

I think Kesler knew things weren't right with his health, but decided to come back early from injury anyway, and play through. He never let on how he was really feeling. Can't blame Gillis for that one.

Hate this early off-season, can't even watch the playoffs. Who do you cheer for? Phoenix? Well, they are done, and maybe that's good too. If Phoenix won it all, Bettman would be grinning like a Cheshire cat, thinking "see? I knew hockey would work in the dessert". Can't really cheer for the Rangers, as I too remember 1994 all too well. Don't want to cheer for the Kings, as they've been in the league as long as the Canucks and have never won the Cup. Now they might win their first, making the Canucks look even more futile. Oh well, Go Devils.

    Bring on the 2012-2013 season
