Thanks....Makes for some interesting reading. One name that jumps out and would be a great 2 year vet rental would be Holmstrom. Big F who wrote the book on dirty/garbage goals in front of the net. Still wouldnt mind seein Arnot either.
Isn't Holmstrom retiring, or am I thinking about the wrong Redwing? I know Lidstrom is thinking about 1 more year.

I hadn't heard anything, but I would think it's retirement or resign with the Wings. Don't think he's a real option.
Lets get is started then.. Looking at this list and the holes on this team, what position should get fixed first? I know the possibility exists to trade for a RFA, but we will keep it simple. All things considered, I think its a toss up between D and net minder. The thing that bothers me about Crow is that he seems to fall asleep out there at times. The horrible OT goals he gave up are proof of that. I know hes signed for another 2 years, but he should be told nothing is certain. He needs to come into camp with the mind set that he needs to perform day in and day out. I dont mind Emery being a back up, but age and bad hips are against him. The more I read about Carter Hutton, the more I like about him. Yes hes bounced around some, but came in and worked his *** off in Rockford. Not only did he become a team favorite, he set multiple records this year. He also clearly out played the highly touted Salak. I had high hopes for Salak for his play over in Europe, but he turned out to be a little cry baby and a pouter. We dont need another Luongo in this league.
I pick G over D for this simple reason. If changes are made to the D zone set up and especially on the PK, the D should be fine. I truly feel that the scheme Q and his staff were running was so flawed that his players may not have wanted to run it anymore. Your D are gonna make mistakes from time to time. Your goalie has to make those 3-5 bail out saves per game. Crow cannont...cannot let those OT goals go in. Im betting Hutton comes up and takes one of the G spots on that bench. Maybe Crow gets another year, but I would like Hutton to come up and get some NHL time. I would dump Salak asap and start getting another young net minder reps in Rockford.

I'd focus on defense first and foremost. I think adding a #3-4 would do this team wonders. Assuming we didn't move Keith or Hammer, a #3 would keep Leddy on the 3rd pairing and I hope we could bring Keiths minutes done a bit. I think you saw at the end of the regular season when we got Oduya this effect. It allowed ever one to fit into their roles better. I would be ok with Oduya himself coming back, but I was suprised how poorly he played in the playoffs. Also, in a perfect world, the #3 we got would be more of a physical dman than another skater like Oduya.
Seabrook/Keith
FA/Hammer
Leddy/Montador/Olsen
I'm ok keeping the goalies as is. I'm not a huge fan of Crawford but I don't like spending a lot on goalies either. Mike Smith was let go by Tampa, who has no goaltending and this year he was a monster as we saw. Brian Elliot was also an after thought. I'd give Crawford one more year.
Up front we need to add some grit and size. I don't mean fighters, but guys who can play along the boards and in front of the net. Especially, if we are going to go with Kane at C, which it sounds like we are. I would think about moving Bolland. He's a good player but he's shown that he's not a #2 C. I think Kruger could take over for him as #3 without much of a drop off. I would think you could get something back from Bolland and their would be some cap savings as well. Again, I'm not down on Bolland but I think the make up of the team could improve by moving him and plugging in Kruger at 3C.

I wouldn't be opposed to trading Bolland if the return was right. Here's the things the Hawks definitely need to add to be a serious contender:
-A 2nd pairing D-men, preferably a physical one, to go with Hjalmarrsson.
-A 2nd line playmaking C that's decent on faceoffs and can score 50+ points.
-A big LW to put on the top line that can score garbage goals and help protect our top players.
-4th line C that can score 15-20 points and is good at faceoffs. Potential penalty killer.
Goaltender might also join the list if we add all of those things and Craw still struggles.
Players I'd look to move:
Niklas Hjalmarrson- I love what he provides, but the price tag is a bit too much.
Michael Frolik- Price tag is too much for a player who didn't see much playing time last year.
Dave Bolland- He's not a 2nd line C, but he's getting paid like he is. I love what he does in terms of shutting down other team's scoring lines, but I feel like we could replace him on the third line with either Kruger or Shaw, and also have cap flexibility to add a legit 2nd line C.
If we move these guys, our team looks like this:
____-Toews-Kane
Sharp-____-Hossa
Stalberg-Kruger-Shaw
Carcillo-____-Bollig
Keith-Seabrook
____-____
Leddy-Montador
Crawford
Emery
Before the moves we're looking at $6,843,206 in cap space if the salary cap stays the same. If we trade those 3 players, we're looking at $15,009,872 in cap space. Keep in mind that this is if the salary cap stays the same. I see it likely going up slightly.
We need to figure out some names that could fill these holes: Top line LW, 2nd line C, 4th line C, and 2 2nd pairing defensemen.
For LW, I've mentioned Dustin Penner and Ryan Smyth as potential top line LWs that could score garbage goals. Penner is more like a buy-low option, and Smyth just seems unlikely. I'm not sure who else is options for us.
For 2nd line C, I've mentioned Derick Brassard and Sam Gagner as options, but if we're trading Bolland, I'd look into getting more proven options. Jason Arnott is someone I've heard mentioned that I wouldn't mind. Olli Jokinen might not be a bad option as well. A potential in-house option is Mark McNeill, who may be ready to play in the NHL next year. If he makes the team and can prove to be a solid 2nd line C, that would allow us to put our money into getting a LW and some 2nd pairing defensemen. Not sure how likely it is that McNeill makes the team as our 2nd line C.
For the 4th line C, I'd look to bring Mayers back or go for a Jeff Halpern type.
For defense, I'd love to add Ryan Suter. More realistically, we pick up someone like Bryan Allen and another shotblocker type.

6 Blackhawks to continue playing this summer
Anyone think we will go after some of the bigger names out there this offseason?
^^^^
I don't see how we could. Right now we are about 7 mil under the cap for next year. It should be pointed out that the league is going to be negotiating a new cba, so that could change things. But assuming we are playing by the same or at least similar rules and cap, I don't think we'll be players for the big names (Parise, Suter). They are going to cost close to 7 mil themselves. The only way we get involved would be to shed some cap in deals. Bolland ($3.375), Hammer ($3.5) and Frolik ($2.33) would be the guys that could be moved without touching the core, that would free up significant money. I suppose if you moved two or three of them that we could be players in the Suter market. I just don't see it as likely.
Bolded are the players that interest me, although that doesn't mean I see us going for them. Alexei Ponikarovsky as well as Jeff Halpern and Paul Gaustad interest me for the top line LW and 4th line C spots, respectively.
