Chipper is a different animal all together. you honor your enemies for the fight they fought. I would give Chipper a standing Ovation just for the angst he caused me all these years.
I asked my cousin the Rex Sox fan the other day, Would you cheer Derek Jeter on his last trip to Fenway? His answer was an immediate "YES" Without the yanks and Jeter being so good against the Sox, 2004 wuld not be as HUGE as it is. Respect your enemies, than wish them farewell.

Agreed. Tejada's approach at the plate is that of a more experienced hitter. I have always loved this guy and that's why I wasn't crying in my beer when Jose chose to leave. Maybe the Mets were banking on Tejada and are sure that Ruben can maybe not replace the type of player Reyes was for us but to give us the first Ruben Tejada which IMO is looking very special.

I hate this move. Let him retire and then do it. He's our enemy right now not our friend.

Did they ever do this for when Mike Piazza came back to Shea?

Nope, they did something for him in his last homegame at Shea.

I am all for the tribute, he was a good Met while he wore the uniform. After that, he's a Marlin.

As far as the Piazza comparison goes, Reyes career as a Met is more akin to Piazza's time in LA.

Also, this will bring closure and help everyone to move on.

Much like with Chipper I don't care one way or the other on this. This is clearly just to sell out the game, and who cares.

The only question I have is...Didn't they do a Jose Reyes appreciation day in his last home game last season? Maybe he'll take himself out of this game after one at bat too.

Piazza was a true champion, 3 playoff's one World series appearence and the 9-11 HR alone would make him a hero in this town.
Reyes was one of my favorites, but the man was hurt ALL the time, and part of major collapses in 2007 2008. Jose left at the prime of is career, Piazza was let go because he was basically done.
Piazza was actually given a standing ovation after hitting a homerun AGAINST the Mets at Shea stadium. That is how well he was loved.
He didn't single-handedly do anything. Piazza's legacy is strong enough without hyperbole.

Reyes' injuries should not color your perception of him as a player. Kid was always smiling, always energetic, and was easily the most exciting player we've ever had. To knock him for leaving when there really wasn't much of a choice in the matter is absurd.

He deserves a nice tribute. And after that, we can all start booing his *** like the proper Marlin he is.

That's what this is really all about.

With that being said, we should have "honor former Mets players day" as standing operating procedure.....

BTW, when is Willie Harris coming to town....

But just like with the Chipper Jones situation, I think it is flat out wrong for the Mets to be officially honoring any player in an opposing uniform.

Let the fans cheer him and give him an ovation (mixed with boos I'm sure).

But don't give him a damn ceremony for walking away - just a few months after he walked away, whatever the circumstance. Give him a ceremony after he retires if you want - just not now.

Jose Reyes is now the enemy, and has signed on to be a divisional for for 6 more years. I'd rather watch him fail miserably as a player and have his career fall apart than give the man a tribute while he wears that lousy uniform.
I disagree with you on some levels...but you make one point very good point imo.

I was at the game when Tom Seaver returned to Shea for the first time in a Reds uniform. I don't recall that the Mets did anything for Seaver, but the fans paid him tributes many times over. He got 3 or 4 standing ovations...maybe more. He won the game and beat Jerry Koosman. I got the sense at least 1/2 the fans was pulling for him to do that; some out of love for him and his contributions to the Mets, and maybe some to spite M. Donald Grant.

    That's exactly my point.

These are things the fans take care of, and should be allowed to take care of, without the pomp and circumstance of Jay Horowitz's influence.

To me, it's much more meaningful and much more honest to let the natural reaction of the fans in the moment come out. If I'm there, I'll stand up give Reyes an ovation and chant Jose, Jose, Jose one last time. After that, he's a Marlin and that's that.

I always think the team should stay out of these matters unless it involves a guy who is either retired or about to end his career for your team.
