I think to take the next step he needs to make more deep ones, or take those shots.

Although It's not like I watch all 16 ATL games every year either

Most of us attest it to Mularkey. While Ryan needs help with his deep confidence and accuracy, Mularkey's style was conservative and a lot of us (Falcons nation, maybe not PSD) believe he continually preached to Ryan about playing it safe, not making dangerous throws and not going far downfield.

I agree with all that, makes a lot of sense.

    deep confidence
That part is most of it IMO.

Yeah Mularkey is very vanilla and I think allot of the reason he threw deep so few times. But in saying that Jones still lead all rookies and was like 7th or 4th or something in passes over 40 yards, so he can throw deep and should do it more now

Alot of those plays for Jones over 40 were yards after catch tho but not saying Matt cant throw deep. I know he can.

He doesn't have Ryan Mallett's arm, but he's not Pennington either. Like you said, it's mostly deep ball accuracy and that has to do with timing with the WRs, setting his feet, etc. Roddy isn't/wasn't a true deep threat, but even when he got behind the defense, many of those attempts were overthrows. That's one reason I don't fault him completely -- it's obvious the right coaching (OC and QBC) hasn't been there and that carries over into other areas for him.

I'm just happy that we have a QB that acknowledges and addresses the areas of his game that needs improvement. He has great work ethic and that will pay off. Will the weight room give him a rocket arm? Probably not, but I don't think he necessarily needs one. He's smart, and any added strength will help. I've seen him zip some passes in pretty good on some of those mid range throws. If he can get a little added strength to put that into his deeper throws, I'll be more than satisfied. If they address the line and give him some more time, that will also help his accuracy for those throws.

Yeah guys we got to remember and ask ourselves just how many times when Ryan threw deep did he have the tme to set his feet and make a good throw, I'm betting not allot since our line play was sub par.

That's true. You can't fault him too much when he has about 2.5 seconds to make a deep pass to really only one receiver who could stretch the field that fast. Hopefully Koetter can use Douglas more so we can get his speed that is much needed.

Shocked it took him this long to consider working on it. But hey, no time like the present. I hope it works out, because I don't want to spend all of next season thinking, "I wonder how John Parker Wilson would look with this group..."

The answer is...horrible! So save your thoughts. The only time we should even think about thinking that is when Chris Redman is on the field and Matt cant play for some reason.

JPW was dropped to the practice squad after how bad he looked last preseason if I'm not mistaken. This isn't the first time Matt Ryan has focused on the weight room to get stronger. I'm sure they're just doing more specific exercises to target that area than they have in the past. Matt Ryan was hit a lot last year, and that's why I'm wondering if we get a LT with our first pick. I agree that getting Douglas more involved, especially in some of those quick underneath routes or slants could help us out a lot. He proved last year that he can turn those catches into major yardage. He was severely under utilized in my opinion. I also think that the integration of a screen game throughout the season will make defenses second guess blitzing so much and give us more deep opportunities as a result. make them pay for bringing the house, and they'll hesitate the next time. Then Matt will get the time he needs to let plays develop.
