From the always wonderful DC Sports Bog.
When asked about Camden Yards and it's 20th Anniversary...
Camden Yards will always be an outstanding ballpark and one of a kind. It started the new era of "retro" parks. But what is the point of taking shots at DC and Cincy?? Both places are nice parks. Cincinnati is also a great baseball town rich in history. I doubt either stadium was going for a huge retro look. Nats Park was built more modern than anything.“It has never tried to be something that it’s not. There was nothing fake about it. There are no hills in center field. They didn’t copy anyone. As soon as you walk in, it had that cathedral feeling. You thought immediately, ‘This place will stand the test of time.’ Anyone can build something new, anyone can buy something new. This was a park that you thought other teams would copy. And that’s exactly what has happened....
“Some have captured some of that feel, some haven’t,” he also said. “Washington, Cincinnati, those parks won’t stand the test of time. When you step in Camden Yards, you got the feeling that this was a ballpark that would be welcome in any era in baseball history.”
I happen to enjoy Camden, but there are still parts of it that I don't like. That can be said about all parks. But not every park has to be constructed like Baltimore, and shouldn't be. It's not the end all be all for baseball. Anybody can take a shot but to go out of your way and do it is pretty sad and pathetic for Showalter.
