Royals get Shields/Davis for Myers/Odorizzi/Montgomery
The Royals have lots of young pieces (although most of them are in their third years) in their line-up. They need a veteran to lead the pitching staff and James Shields is a legit ace (3.52 ERA with 223 K in 227.2 IP). Wade Davis also had last season to get his head right in the bullpen in Tampa and posted a sub-2.5 ERA with 87 K to 29 BB in 70 IP. I believe as I'm sure KC does that he can be the #3 or #4 in Kansas City.
Myers is an elite prospect and a huge price to pay but for an instant ace and a long-term rotation piece then maybe its worth it. Odorizzi is a good prospect but in the opinion of the Royals front-office they seem to think much higher of Yordano Ventura, John Lamb, and Kyle Zimmer (obviously). Montgomery has bee a huge disappointment and I don't even consider that a loss, he does not have the work ethic to be a solid MLB pitcher (even AAA for that matter).
This line-up is still one of the best up-and-coming ones in the league with Salvador Perez, Eric Hosmer, Mike Moostakas, Billy Butler, Alex Gordon, Alcedis Escobar, and Lorenzo Cain. Their bullpen was great last year despite an insane workload, so they will be even better this year.
Moore built up great farm-system from where there was once nothing and he used a piece to cash in. Of course I'd rather have Shields inked to a 4-year extension but we will see what happens.
Solid line-up and if Frenchy rebounds at all it can be very good. This is assuming Hosmer returns to form which given his history and watching him play a lot last year I firmly believe he will.
1. James Shields 3.52 ERA 223 K 58 BB 1.17 WHIP 227.2 IP 2. Jeremy Guthrie 3.16 ERA 56 K 19 BB 1.13 WHIP 91 IP (14 starts with KC last year) 3. Ervin Santana 3.38 ERA 178 K 72 BB 1.22 WHIP 228.2 IP (2011) 4. Wade Davis 2.43 ERA 87 K 29 BB 1.09 WHIP 70.1 IP 5. Danny Duffy 3.90 ERA 28 K 18 BB 1.59 WHIP 27.2 IP
Bruce Chen will fill in for Duffy until about ASG break. If Santana can return to half of what he was in 2011 this staff has the chance to be amazing.
CL- Greg Holland 2.96 ERA 1.37 WHIP 91 K 16 Saves R-SU- Aaron Crow 3.48 ERA 1.18 WHIP 65 K L-SU- Tim Collins 3.36 ERA 1.28 WHIP 93 K MR- Louis Coleman 3.71 ERA 1.31 WHIP 65 K MR- Kelvin Herrera 2.35 ERA 1.19 WHIP 77 K SS- Luis Mendoza 4.23 ERA 1.42 WHIP 104 K
Pen got wore down at the end of last year but there are some great arms in there and it might be fun to see then only have to work for 2 innings more nights.
I am not saying I fully support this trade but I understand it and still like the job as a whole Dayton Moore is doing.
I'm a lifelong Tigers fan and MLB supporter so for me to see you guys finally make some moves is a nice change but were is all the support for this team. Forget the negative talk around the trade and your team. Times at least look like there changing. As a fan of Detroit and MLB it's nice to see an organization trying to improve. Just embrace it and enjoy the competition ahead in 2013.
