Welcome to The New Era of Cardinals baseball

MIAMI Welcome to The New Era.

In 2012, the St. Louis Cardinals are entering a period of dramatic transformation.

Albert Pujols, Tony La Russa and Dave Duncan checked out, closing the book on an important chapter of St. Louis baseball history.

This iconic franchise will proudly carry on, more enduring and lasting than the exceptional stars that have graced the Birds on the Bat uniform through the decades.

It's no different now, though change can be painful.

Bernie Bytes: First impression of Cardinals

Some day-after thoughts from the Cardinals' 4-1 win over Miami in their 2012 season opener....

    Reading Time 5 Minutes:

It's one game, and the real tests come during the inevitable hard times that hit a team during a 162-game season. But a couple of things seem immediately obvious to me, after being around the 2012 Cardinals for a day:

Didn't know where else to say this, but.

Cardinals are first in baseball in offense (have now passed the Tigers)

And are top ten in pitching.

Good start boys, let's win this home trip.

Cardinals continue to be the best hitting team in baseball, and by a good margin too.

I know it's only 400 plate appearances, but we are actually pretty far ahead of the Tigers for first.

After 10 games (1/16th of the season)

    Cardinals - .372 wOBA, 142 wRC+, .299/.359/.504
    15 HR, 57 runs scored, 394 PA. 6.4 UZR, 0.9 BSR, 4.7 fWAR

First in all of those numbers, except for PA (3rd) and 5th in BsR

We have not only been the best hitting team in baseball, but the best defensive team, the fifth best at running the bases and are about 10thish in pitching.

    Very nice start.

We continue to have the best offense in baseball despite not having a DH.

However, the Rangers are right behind us now after they scored 18 and it took us 10 innings to score.

Yep, we are 3rd in runs now (due to the ridic game by texas, and the game today by the braves). 5.1 war by our offense is the most in the majors by 1.5 wins.

Also, a surprising stat is that we are 1st in the majors in terms of WHIP (helps we have given up only 21 (2 Intentional) walks in 11 games). Top 5 in ERA, top 5 in quality starts and BAA.

OBPA is also tied for first with Washington, and OPS is 2nd behind washington. So far so good guys .

Yadi is tied for 5th in the majors in WAR. Who saw that coming? (and yes, I know it's a small sample size).

    Matt Carpenter
    .300 AVG, 1 HR, 6 RBI, .431 OBP, .375 SLG, .806 OPS, .371 wOBA, 136 wRC+, .4 fWAR, 126 OPS+

Just a vent....this article and virtually every article written regarding the Cardinals since the opening of spring training has mentioned the fact that Pujols is gone. No kidding! Personally I'm glad the Cardinals didn't spend the money, and I don't need to read it again and again by every Cardinal and Mlb beat writer. I've moved on, I only wish the writers would.

As much as Pujols meant in St. Louis, the name on the front of the jersey still matters more than the one on the back, as unknown reliever Victor Marte, who doesn't even have an MLB profile photo yet, would attest. Heck, Shannon Magrane, "American Idol" daughter of former Cardinal pitcher Joe Magrane (who started on Opening Day from 1988 to 1991) received a louder ovation than most players (including those earning their paychecks in Anaheim) hear on opening day.
