    Lester tabbed for Opening Day

Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine announced today that Jon Lester would start on Opening Day against Detroit on April 5.

Lester will face defending American League Most Valuable Player and Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander in the 1:05 p.m. game.

Josh Beckett will start the home opener against the Rays on April 13.

Valentine understands that for the starters, the Opening Day assignment is a big deal.

"It's a nice thing to plan and do," the manager said "I talked to the guy [Beckett] with the most experience and he brought it up in the conversation, so it's obviously a topic."

That Beckett backed Lester for the assignment made it easy for Valentine to decide.

"It was great information. It was like, 'Gosh, I'm glad I don't have to now worry about this throughout spring training and all that stuff.' Maybe I was surprised. Pleasantly surprised," Valentine said.

Good, I was worried Beckett would be bitter, but it seems to be all good. Im a still just a tad more concerned with whos pitching the 5th game of the year though.

We all remember how he did last opening day. Hopefully it's different this time around.

Congrats to Lester. No surprise here really. It's the bottom end of our rotation that has me worried.
With the deepest of regrets I am announcing that I will be leaving Pro Sports Daily. No reason in particular but wanted to thank everyone for a great 6 years here. Lots of great discussion and good poll series as well. Also fun re-drafts. Best of luck to you all in the future.

Completely the right call. With no offense to Josh Beckett, the kid is the teams ace. Just hoping he doesn't start off to his usual cold start.

^ well with BV around, softy springs seem a thing of the past... Lester should be tougher out of the gate then previously.

6/27/09: “We expect [Rondo] to play by the rules and be a leader as a point guard. We need him to be more of a leader,” Ainge said. “There were just a couple situations where he was late this year, I don’t know if he was sitting in his car, but showed up late and the rest of the team was there. We have team rules and you have to be on time. He was fined for being late, he said he was stuck in traffic, and it’s just unacceptable.”

told you all since 2010 he was a toolbag.....

I hope lester can work out his pitch count ****. He was ace level from 08-2010 when he develops that cutter and ringing up 10Ks regularly.

I know it's been sort of assumed amongst Red Sox fans that Lester was going to be the ace. But, I think this is the year where he takes a hold of that title. I think he's going to come out incredibly motivated and well-prepared.
