Does playing in the tournaments he missed last year help him that much in terms of moving up the rankings? Say like he wins at least 2 matches before being eliminated in all the tournaments he plays in.

which tournaments are you talking about?

Basically six best 500 and 250 tournaments count.

    ATP World Tour 500
Date Tournament Round Points Drop Date
    20.02.2012 Memphis F 300 25.02.2013
    23.04.2012 Barcelona S 180 29.04.2013
    03.10.2011 Tokyo R16 45 08.10.2012
    Best of Other Countable Tournaments
Date Tournament Round Points Drop Date
    13.02.2012 San Jose W 250 18.02.2013
    02.01.2012 Chennai W 250 07.01.2013
    17.10.2011 Stockholm S 90 22.10.2012
Lets say he gets more than 45 points in a tournaments, it will certainly help because the 45 points will be dropped and replaced by new points.

I know played in a 250 tournament this week. However it wouldn't have helped him unless he made it past the Quarters (45 points for quarters in 250).

He missed some 1000 series, and the US Open. How much would that help?

So your asking if he wins a couple of matches every tournament.

Two wins would mean R16 in the master series.

So Lets say he makes the r16 in cincy and toronto (two that he missed) that would be 180 points (90 each)

2 wins at the Us open would put in the r32 that would 90 points.

270 points + 1540 points = 1810 points. According to the current rankings that would put him at 16th. However this is just an estimates because it depends how many points the other players have at the time.

I only calculated r16 results for the two master series he missed but let say he makes r16 in all of the upcoming master series: Shanghai, Paris, Toronto, Cincy.

    90x4=360 + 90 (r32 at us open) + 1540 (current points) - 55 (points from shanghai and paris) = 1935 Points

That would roughly put at the 15th Spot. Again this is just estimate.

Moving up becomes exponentially harder the higher you go up the rankings. There is only a 555 points difference between 16th and 32nd ranked players. However there is a 1405 points difference between 8th and 16th ranked players.

He can easily make the top 16 without having to beat top 8 players. So its definitely possible.

I was just trying to determine if he can make it to the top 10 by the end of the year. Guess not though unless he makes it deep in the 1000 and US open.

If Milos beats Berdych, I have great hopes for this player.

    Milos over Berdych.

Now Milos will beat Wawrinka then face Federer.

Milos with 180 points for just making the quarters. he is laready 19 in the world, that should move him into the top 16 for the us open, which is big for him.

Milos to face Nishakori in the tokyo finals. this is a big match and valuable 500 points. The top 10 seems really attainable. the top 8 seems harder to reach unless he goes real deep (couple of semis, or final/championship) in the two master series events.
