How on earth did the 5th place team in the ACC Coastal draw the 3rd place team of the entire Big East?
Let's go by record alone. Cincy is 9-3. Duke 6-6. That alone should have been enough for the money-grubbing BCS to realize it wouldn't be a great match-up.
Let's go by quality wins. Duke really doesn't have any (winning at wake and at home to UVA and UNC aren't wins that smack of quality) whereas Cincy has beaten Pitt (and by 24), VTech (who beat Duke soundly), Syracuse, as well as nail-biting loses to Louisville (eventual Big East champs), Rutgers (solid team), and Toledo (another bowl-bound, solid team).
So, our first bowl berth in God knows how many seasons is not a fair match-up from the start.
I guess the only victory to hope for will be that Duke manages to outdraw Bearcat fans in the stands. It's in Charlotte so it seems likely, but I regularly attended Duke games where ECU fans filled 90% of Wallace Wade.
The BCS really has nothing to do with the smaller bowls. But you're right they just select teams based on tv ratings or tickets sales. They really could care less about the best match up on the field.
Be glad. If not for UNC and Miami you would likely be playing Vanderbilt in the Music City Bowl and they are a tougher draw than Cincinnati right now.... They just got their coach resigned to an extension whereas Cincinnati lost their coach.
Not only that but Vanderbilt has been hot at the end of the year. They won their last 6 games beating Auburn, Mass 49-7, Kentucky 40-0, Ole Miss, Tennessee 41-18 and Wake Forest 55-21....
