Patriots place LB Tarpinian on IR, sign WR Underwood

Patriots place LB Tarpinian on IR, sign WR Underwood

The Patriots made a few roster moves on Thursday, the biggest of which was placing linebacker Jeff Tarpinian on injured reserve due to a head injury, effectively ending his season.

And signed wide receiver Tiquan Underwood to the 53-man roster . Underwood has had a couple stints on the New England Patriots this season, but has not played in a regular season game.

Underwood, 24, spent the previous two seasons with Jacksonville and totaled eight catches for 111 yards and 24 kick returns for 561 yards. He had been signed and released twice by the New England Patriotsearlier this season.

Rookie linebacker Jeff Tarpinian was placed on injured reserve with a head injury. Over seven games he totaled 12 tackles on defense and special teams.

Tarpinian finished the season with seven defensive tackles and four defensive tackles. He was considered one of the better special teamers, and a player that Bill Belichick saw significant improvement in over the weeks

The Patriots also signed Ross Ventron to the practice squad, releasing Josh Victorian to open up the spot.

Ravens LB Lewis inactive again vs. 49ers

Ravens LB Lewis inactive again vs. 49ers

The Baltimore Ravens will play their second straight game without team leader and linebacker Ray Lewis, when they take on the San Francisco 49ers Thursday night.

Lewis was placed on the inactive list. he missed Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals, and though he practiced in limited fashion earlier this week, he will not play against the San Francisco 49ers due to his lingering toe injury.

Lewis was questionable with a toe injury. He missed the Ravens' 31-24 win against the Cincinnati Bengals last week, breaking a streak of 57 consecutive games started.

Brendon Ayanbadejo will replacer Lewis at middle linebacker.

Dannell Ellerbe started in Lewis' place last week, but he is also inactive with a hamstring/groin injury.

Baltimore Ravens also placed cornerback Chris Carr , defensive tackle Arthur Jones and running back Anthony Allen on the inactive list.

The San Francisco 49res ruled out quarterback Scott Tolzien, wide receiver Brett Swain, cornerback Shawntae Spencer, fullback Bruce Miller, guards Daniel Kilgore and Mike Person and defensive tackle Ian Williams.

Sproles helping Saints Offense reach new heights in NFL

Sproles helping Saints Offense reach new heights in NFL

Darren Sproles says he never expected to be such a central figure on an offense that could go down as the most prolific in Saints history.

New Orleans Saints running back Darren Sproles (43) moves up field against the Houston Texans during the first half of an NFL football game, in New Orleans.

With the Saints on pace to set a single-season franchise record for yards from scrimmage, Drew Brees figures the addition of versatile New Orleans Saints running back Sproles is a considerable factor in the increased production of an already prolific offense.

Sproles leads the Saints in rushing with 348 yards on 51 carries, and average of 6.8 yards per carry. His longest run from scrimmage has been 35 yards and he has two touchdowns rushing. Sproles' 60 receptions rank second on the club behind only tight end Jimmy Graham's 62. Sproles has 448 yards and three TDs receiving.

His rushing total is already a single-season high in his seven-year career, and he needs only 73 more yards receiving in the next six games to set a new season-high in that category.

Drew Brees says he can't name a better free-agent pickup in the NFL this year than the speedy, versatile, 5-foot-6 running back. Sproles is among the New Orleans Saints ' leading rushers and receivers, not to mention their best return man.
