    2011-2012 OFF-SEASON CALENDAR

    OCTOBER

    30 - MLB free agency period begins at 12:01am ET.
    31 - Team, player or mutual options must be filed by midnight ET. Concerns 3B Aramis Ramirez along with both RHP Ryan Dempster and Jeff Samardzija.

    NOVEMBER

    1 - Deadline for the Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox to agree to a compensation package for Theo Epstein.
    3 - Free agent signing period begins at 12:01am ET.
    9 - 27th Annual Cubs Convention tickets go on sale.
    10 - End of waiver period.
    11 - Beginning of new waiver period - waivers secured on or after November 11, 2011 remain in effect until February 15, 2012, exception: outright waivers.
    14 - AL, NL Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year Awards announced: Craig Kimbrel, Atlanta Braves; Jeremy Hellickson, Tampa Bay Rays.
    14-15 - General Managers Meetings - Milwaukee, WI.
    15-16 - Owners Meetings - Milwaukee, WI.
    15 - AL Cy Young Award announced: Justin Verlander, Detroit Tigers.
    16 - AL, NL Manager of the Year Awards announced: Joe Maddon, Tampa Bay Rays; Kirk Gibson, Arizona Diamondbacks.
    17 - NL Cy Young Award announced: Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles Dodgers.
    18 - Last day to file reserve lists for all Major and Minor League levels - Rule 5 Draft protection.
    21 - AL Most Valuable Player Award announced: Justin Verlander, Detroit Tigers.
    22 - NL Most Valuable Player Award announced: Ryan Braun, Milwaukee Brewers.
    23 - Last day for former club to offer salary arbitration to free agents in order to be eligible for compensation. Deadline is midnight ET.

    DECEMBER

    1 - Last day to request outright waivers to assign a player prior to Rule 5 Draft.
    5-8 - Baseball Winter Meetings - Dallas, TX.
    5 - 5 p.m. ET is last time to outright a player prior to the Rule 5 Draft.
    5 - Balloting results announced for Hall of Fame Golden Era Committee.
    6 - Balloting results announced for Hall of Fame Ford C. Frick Award.
    7 - Last day for players who declare free agency to accept an arbitration offer from their former club. Deadline is midnight ET.
    8 - Major League Rule 5 Draft - Dallas, TX.
    11 - Current collective bargaining agreement expires.
    12 - Last day to tender contracts to players with less than six years of MLB service time. Deadline is midnight ET.
    31 - Deadline for Baseball Writers Association of America ballots.

    JANUARY

    5 - Individual game tickets for 2012 Cubs Spring Training home games go on sale.
    5-15 - Salary arbitration filing period.
    9 - Baseball Hall of Fame inductee class of 2012 announced.
    13-15 - 27th Annual Cubs Convention.
    18 - Exchange of salary arbitration figures.

    FEBRUARY

    1-21 - Salary arbitration hearings.
    13 - Voluntary reporting date to Spring Training for pitchers, catchers and injured players.
    15 - End of waiver period.
    16 - Beginning of new waiver Period.
    18 - Mandatory reporting date to Spring Training for pitchers and catchers. Voluntary reporting date to Spring Training for other players.
    23 - Mandatory reporting date to Spring Training for position players.
    24 - First full team Spring Training workout.

    MARCH

    2 - Mandatory reporting date to Spring Training for all players.
    4 - Cubs Spring Training Opening Day - Cubs versus A's at HoHoKam Park.
    9 - Individual game tickets for 2012 Cubs regular season home games go on sale.
    2-11 - Teams may renew contracts of unsigned players.
    19 - Last day to place a player on unconditional release waivers and pay 30 days termination pay instead of 45 days.
    28-29 - 2012 Opening Series held in Tokyo, Japan - Seattle Mariners vs. Oakland Athletics

    APRIL

    2 - Last day to request unconditional release waivers on a player without having to pay his full 2011 salary - only 45 days termination pay is due.
    4 - All Clubs must reduce active roster to 25 players. Opener between Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals at new Marlins ballpark.
    5 - Opening Day for Chicago Cubs - Chicago Cubs vs. Washington Nationals at Wrigley Field.



    2011-2012 OFF-SEASON TRANSACTIONS

    AUGUST

    19 - Fired general manager Jim Hendry. Promoted assistant GM Randy Bush to interim GM.

    SEPTEMBER

    3 - Signed vice president of player personnel Oneri Fleita to a four-year contract extension.
    12 - Named Julian Green vice president, communications and community affairs.

    OCTOBER

    21 - Named Theo Epstein, former General Manager of the Boston Red Sox, President of Baseball Operations.
    24 - Re-signed SS Jonathan Mota and OF Jim Adduci to minor league contracts.
    25 - Agreed to terms with President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein on a five-year contract.
    27 - Announced in conjunction with the San Diego Padres that Jed Hoyer and Jason McLeod will leave the Padres, effective immediately, to become executive vice president/general manager and senior vice president/scouting and player development with the Cubs. The Cubs agreed to send a player to be named later as compensation.
    29 - Announced RHP Ryan Dempster exercised his 2012 player option worth $14 million.
    30 - Six former members of the Cubs filed for free agency: 1B Carlos Pena, OF Reed Johnson, LHP John Grabow, and RHP Rodrigo Lopez, Ramon Ortiz and Kerry Wood.
    31 - Team exercised their side of the $16 million mutual contract option on 3B Aramis Ramirez for 2012; Ramirez informed club that he will decline and become a free agent; Cubs are not responsible for $2 million buyout. Team declined $3 million club option on RHP Jeff Samardzija.

    NOVEMBER

    2 - Announced manager Mike Quade has been fired and will not return to the club for the 2012 season.
    4 - Announced Joe Bohringer, former Major League scout for the Arizona Diamondbacks, has been hired as Director of Pro Scouting.
    12 - Announced Shiraz Rehman, former director of player personnel for the Arizona Diamondbacks, has been hired as an Assistant to the General Manager.
    16 - Taylor Baseball announces Scott Fairbanks has accepted an area scouting job with the Chicago Cubs and will step down as head coach.
    17 - Hired Dale Sveum, former hitting coach for the Milwaukee Brewers, to a three-year deal with an option for 2015 as Manager.
    18 - Selected the contracts of LHP Jeff Beliveau, INF Junior Lake and INF Josh Vitters from Tennessee (SL) and OF Matt Szczur from Daytona (FSL). Assigned RHP Esmailin Caridad, RHP Kyle Smit and OF Lou Montanez outright to Iowa (PCL).
    25 - Re-signed RHP Justin Berg and Marco Carrillo to minor league contracts; OF Lou Montanez elected free agency.
    29 - Announced Jamie Quirk, former bullpen coach for the Houston Astros, had been hired as bench coach.
    30 - Signed OF David DeJesus to two-year deal, including an option for a third year.

    DECEMBER

    4 - Named former LHP John Koronka regional scout in charge of Florida.
    5 - 3B Ron Santo elected to the Hall of Fame.
    8 - Acquired 3B Ian Stewart and RHP Casey Weathers from the Colorado Rockies for OF Tyler Colvin and INF D.J. LeMahieu.

    There's no reason for him to divulge that info, really. It gives other teams a small advantage in negotiations with FA.
