Baseball America's mid season top 50 prospects

    43. Jean Segura

He is our only player on the list. That is the highest Baseball America has ever rated him, previously 57th (pre 2011) and 55th (pre 2012). Also a lot higher than Sickels had him

hey why is that our minor league is soo depleted ? i mean ya we make trades but looks like we really really low on high end prospects....

is it cause we always draft late?? or we just cant make right drafts?(meaning there are players we dont pick that latter end up being good?)

also why is it that we so set against international signings?

with good minor league we can have future players or have something to go out and trade for players

Well losing Tyler Skaggs, Patrick Corbin, and Donn Roach in trades hurts. And then you have Trout, Trumbo, Bourjos, Conger, Walden, and Richards that have graduated from prospect status. That is A LOT of talent right there

Over the last 2 years we have lost 1 first round pick (Pujols), and two second round picks (Wilson and Downs). Add those 3 guys with the other 3 guys we traded thats a lot of talent. We did have 5 first round picks and 5 supplemental first round picks in 2009/2010, but we whiffed on some of those Clarke/Bolden/Kehrer and then you have questionable guys like Grichuk/Bedrosian/Lindsey. So out of those 10 picks we got 4 good/very good prospects Trout/Skaggs/Richards/Cowart.

Your guess is as good as mine, we are still developing some talented international guys but I just imagine what it could be if we spent over 1M.

do we have anyone thats in line to be top 10 prospect in couple years? or could be ?

i mean even Segura is prob never going to hit that and he is the best we got.

in contrast looking at ranger prospect roster it just scares me

I am still little pissed on who selected 'Grichuk' ahead of Trout.
Meaning who in the Angels organization rated him higher than Trout.

No one is in line to be a top 10 guy. I would say the player with the best chance is Cowart.

Trout was higher rated by the Angels organization, Grichuk was taken first because of sign ability concerns. Basically if the Angels had only the 24th pick Trout would have been the pick.

Our old scouting director said that Trout was #2 on the Angels "Big Board" with Strasburg being #1 on their list

    I disappeared in here again

    Triple-A (3rd 51-57)

    RHRP Jeremy Berg IP 55.2 ERA 3.56 K 50 BB 15 BAA .255

Having a nice season in a very hitter friendly league. Nice K/BB rates. We have room on the 40 man roster so we could see him in September. He throws from the side like Darren O'Day.

    RHRP Ryan Brasier IP 41.2 ERA 4.97 K 35 BB 19 BAA .301

Outside of April has been pretty bad. 0.63 GO/AO ratio, but has only allowed one home run on the season so thats promising.

    RHRP David Carpenter IP 6 ERA 0.00 K 8 BB 2 BAA .000

Has made 4 appearances since being demoted and he continues to show why he should be in the big leagues.

    RHRP Bobby Cassevah IP 31 ERA 8.13 K 14 BB 14 BAA .343

Continues to show why he shouldnt be in the big leagues.

    RHSP Barry Enright IP 116 ERA 5.82 K 76 BB 52 BAA .284

I dont get releasing Bell to trade for this guy.

    RHRP Steven Geltz IP 23.1 ERA 4.24 K 18 BB 19 BAA .244

Geltz has give up 11 runs in Triple-A and all of those runs have come in 3 outings, 5.1 innings. We should see Geltz in September.

    RHSP Eddie McKiernan IP 53.1 ERA 7.09 K 30 BB 15 BAA .324

Put him back in Double-A and back in the bullpen.

    LHSP Brad Mills IP 67 ERA 5.24 K 42 BB 24 BAA .293

Awesome player. Got rid of Mathis. Gave the big league club 5 shutout innings.

    LHSP Greg Smith IP 93.2 ERA 4.23 K 53 BB 27 BAA .259

Hasnt been a bad pickup to give us a little depth.

    C Hank Conger Avg .306 HR 4 2B 9 OBP .355 SLG .429 SB 1 CS 0

Good job not calling him up while Iannetta was down.

    3B Luis Jimenez Avg .316 HR 10 2B 28 OBP .346 SLG .497 SB 10 CS 4

Has been hot recently, has 3 HR and 5 BB in his last 10 games. We could see him in September, or if Callaspo goes down.

    1B Efren Navarro Avg .293 HR 6 2B 25 OBP .333 SLG .407 SB 2 CS 1

He is going to get a lot of playing time with the big league club.

    OF Kole Calhoun Avg .297 HR 11 2B 24 OBP .360 SLG .518 SB 10 CS 3

    Glad we didnt trade him.

    OF Ryan Langers Avg .270 HR 6 2B 16 OBP .399 SLG .447 SB 5 CS 3

    BEAST.

    Double-A (3rd 46-59)

    LHRP Buddy Boshers IP 8 ERA 4.50 K 10 BB 1 BAA .324

Recently called up from Advanced Single-A where he put up good numbers.

    RHRP Ryan Chaffee IP 26 ERA 3.46 K 30 BB 18 BAA .172

Since being called up from Advanced Single-A he has struggled with his command, but he has been nearly unhittable and is still striking out a lot of guys.

    RHRP Caleb Graham IP 42.1 ERA 2.34 K 49 BB 13 BAA .214

Graham has been really good this year and if you take out April where he gave up 8 ER (11 total on the season) his numbers become very very good. I think there is a chance we see him in September.

    RHRP Kevin Johnson IP 24.1 ERA 1.85 K 11 BB 5 BAA .212

Got hit hard in Triple-A, but has been good in Double-A. Looks like a Bobby Cassevah type pitcher. Low strikeouts, decent walk rate, ground ball machine.

    RHSP Matt Oye IP 88.2 ERA 4.06 K 58 BB 33 BAA .271

Having an ok season, if he has a future in the big leagues its in the bullpen.

    RHRP Mike Piazza IP 77 ERA 2.57 K 67 BB 28 BAA .211

Has been a spot starter this season and a long relief pitcher, with the Greinke trade he probably stays in the rotation full time.

    LHRP Dakota Robinson IP 33 ERA 6.55 K 24 BB 20 BAA .282

Basically skipped Advanced Single-A, and has gotten demolished in Double-A.

    RHRP Chris Scholl IP 31.1 ERA 7.18 K 28 BB 6 BAA .343

Was injured to start the season, still pitching like hes injured.

    RHSP A.J. Schugel IP 117 ERA 2.85 K 80 BB 46 BAA .230

Having a nice season, might see him next year as a spot starter.

    C Carlos Ramirez Avg .223 HR 2 2B 8 OBP .330 SLG .305 SB 2 CS 0

Love his patience, and his 38% caught stealing percentage. Scioscia will probably love that too. Look for him to replace Wilson in a year or two.

    SS Darwin Perez Avg .195 HR 2 2B 11 OBP .273 SLG .265 SB 10 CS 7

Won SS gold glove last season and has solid patience. Could be a bench option if he can find the success he had last season.

    OF Travis Witherspoon Avg .215 HR 2 2B 7 OBP .262 SLG .430 SB 4 CS 0

Has only played in 19 games in Double-A. Got injured after getting called up.

    Advanced Single-A (5th place 49-57)

    RHSP Lay Batista IP 101.1 ERA 3.64 K 72 BB 46 BAA .256

If he has a future in the big leagues its in the pen. He needs to improve his strikeout/walk numbers.

    LHRP Alexander Burkard IP 37.2 ERA 3.58 K 30 BB 21 BAA .269

Hes 6'9" probably the only reason Im pointing him out.

    RHRP Eric Cendejas IP 45 ERA 2.60 K 33 BB 4 BAA .244

Very very good walk rate, now lets get the strikeouts up.

    RHSP Manny Correa IP 118.2 ERA 3.87 K 84 BB 18 BAA .297

Feels like he has been in our system forever. Good walk rate, bad K rate, and is giving up a lot of hits.

    LHRP Manuel Flores IP 46 ERA 4.11 K 43 BB 20 BAA .218

Just like Correa feels like he has been in our system forever. His move to the pen has help his career.

    LHSP Nick Maronde IP 59.1 ERA 1.82 K 60 BB 14 BAA .187

Needs to be moved up to Double-A. Has been very good this year. Three starts ago he went 7 no hit innings before leaving the game because of his pitch count.

    RHSP Fabio Martinez IP 20.1 ERA 10.18 K 19 BB 27 BAA .298

Was out in the beginning of the year because he messed up his foot. Needs to be moved to the pen.

    RHRP Daniel Tillman IP 14 ERA 1.29 K 17 BB 5 BAA .143

Has been pretty good since his demotion.

    C Jett Bandy Avg .225 HR 5 2B 15 OBP .307 SLG .352 SB 0 CS 1

Skipped Single-A hopefully the bat will catch up with him next season. Nice patience.

    3B Kaleb Cowart Avg .290 HR 4 2B 9 OBP .414 SLG .481 SB 4 CS 2

Has been crazy patient since being called up. 28 walks in 131 ABs. Could see him next season if he keeps this up.

    1B C.J. Cron Avg .291 HR 19 2B 23 OBP .325 SLG .493 SB 3 CS 3

Horrible patience. Good power. Needs to improve his patience or he can GTFO.

    SS Rolando Gomez Avg .294 HR 3 2B 13 OBP .370 SLG .413 SB 12 CS 6

Finally having a good season, the big question is can he repeat in Double-A next season.

    2B Taylor Lindsey Avg .289 HR 6 2B 16 OBP .329 SLG .393 SB 6 CS 3

    See Cron, without power.

    OF Randal Grichuk Avg .278 HR 12 2B 18 OBP .317 SLG .437 SB 12 CS 2

Hes finally starting to come around with the power and patience. 9 HR/11 BB in 190 AB between June/July compared to 3 HR/8 BB in 213 AB between April/May.

    Single-A (8th place 42-62)

    RHRP R.J. Alvarez IP 14.1 ERA 4.40 K 18 BB 6 BAA .250

He gave up 6 ER in one appearance (7 total on the year). His numbers are worse than he has been.

    Cameron Bedrosian IP 52.2 ERA 5.47 K 26 BB 37 BBA .245

If you want to know why Eddie Bane was fired look no further.

    RHSP Michael Clevinger IP 41 ERA 3.73 K 34 BB 13 BAA .243

Hasnt pitched since May 21st, was having a solid season.

    LHSP Eswarlin Jimenez IP 67.2 ERA 3.86 K 38 BB 17 BAA .327

Missed a month of baseball, just recently coming back. Skipped rookie ball after coming over from the Dominican Republic so he is having a solid year.

    RHRP Ty Kelley IP 43.2 ERA 1.85 K 40 BB 14 BAA .195

There is really no reason for him to be in Single-A still. He is already 23, 24 in August.

    RHRP Brandon Lodge IP 4.2 ERA 11.57 K 0 BB 2 BAA 4.09

7-1-4 TICKETS!!! 7-1-4 TICKETS!!! His son.

    LHRP Stephen Tromblee IP 46 ERA 3.52 K 41 BB 13 BAA .234

See Ty Kelley. The Angels must not be very high on either guy.

    RHSP Austin Wood IP 100.2 ERA 4.56 K 90 BB 62 BAA .271

If he can learn to throw strikes he will be a very good pitcher for us.

    C Zach Wright Avg .298 HR 6 2B 2 OBP .416 SLG .532 SB 0 CS 1

Has been very good to start off his pro career. If he can keep it up he will move through the system fast.

    SS Eric Stamets Avg .314 HR 1 2B 5 OBP .377 SLG .381 SB 3 CS 2

Currently on the DL. Had an OPS of .944 in July (17 games) before going down.

    2B Alex Yarbrough Avg .277 2B 6 3B 6 OBP .309 SLG .394 SB 6 CS 2

Isnt having the same success as fellow draftees (that went straight to Single-A) but is still having a solid start to his pro career.

If Wright, Stamets, and Yarbrough can continue the success they are having this season, next season in Advanced Single-A it will give the Angels a much needed shot in the arm.
