Kesler optimistic he'll be ready for the opener

Ryan Kesler remains optimistic he will be able to play in the Vancouver Canucks' season opener despite undergoing hip surgery only four weeks ago.

Kesler was given a time frame that included 10-12 weeks of rehab after he had the labrum in his hip repaired late last month. The Canucks open at home against Pittsburgh on Oct. 6.

"It's going good; small victories here and there," Kesler told Canucks TV from his hometown of Livonia, Mich. "I just got off my crutches and I'll start strengthening so everything is back to normal. I'll start skating here in the next couple of weeks and hopefully be back by that first game."

Kesler's history with hip labrum surgery suggests he might just make the opening night lineup. He had a similar surgery in January 2007 and returned 10 weeks later -- in time for the start of the playoffs. He was initially told he would be out anywhere from 12 to 16 weeks.

"I know what it takes. I know the rehab," Kesler said. "It might even make me braver to try things I probably shouldn't be trying, but it's going to make me come back quicker and hopefully I can play in that first game."

Kesler is coming off a career year in which he scored 41 goals and won the Selke Trophy as the NHL's top defensive forward.

So Anna, what do you think about the notion that Russell Wilson is better than Andrew Luck?

I wouldn't push it. If he re-injures it, I will be bummed. I think we could live without him early in the season if needed.

Pls just get healthy so we have him for the playoffs. I'm not gonna lie I feel like this is gonna be a wasted year. We definitely didn't get better unless one of the younger guys takes a massive leap or gillis makes a trade/signing. Is selanne signed yet?

I agree. Seriously who cares if he misses the first couple of games. He can be there in street clothes for the fans to cheer him when the team comes back. He doesn't need to be dressed and risk injury. Priorities are the playoffs for this team as long as they're together.

Eh, I doubt he'll be back in time. I think he'll miss the first three weeks of the season. This is bad news, but at the same time, good. You'll see Cody Hodgson centreing that second line, and we'll have a chance to see if he's for real. Cody's got the skill to be an all-star centre. I just think he'll have to get traded before then. If he does good, use him as trade bait for a legit top winger.

Based on his what, heart? I'm sorry, but that's not going to make him return any quicker and be healthy.

Based on progression and the fact hes been in this position before and he knows all the rehab work. And he has a very high tolerance for pain.

Says common sense. He obviously proved it last postseason.

LOL. Quit being a homer. Common sense? You, nor I know how high his pain tolorence is. Neither of us know how hurt he was either. I'm sure he was hurt, but that doesn't make his pain tolorence higher than anyone that we know about.

Torn hip labrum plus a groin strain sounds bad to me. How am i being a homer? Im not the only one that thinks he can return opening day...

exactly. It's probably not smart to play right away but he will be physically ABLE to play, just won't be in prime condition.
