New York Yankees (74-47) @ Minnesota Twins (54-68)

    VS.

Thursday, August 18 at Target Field | 8:10 PM ET

CC Sabathia, LHP (16-7, 2.93 ERA)

Brian Duensing, LHP (8-11, 4.53 ERA)

    Scouting Report:

YANKEES: Sabathia has been knocked around in his last two starts, allowing 12 runs in 14 innings to the Red Sox and Rays. Fastball command has been an issue for the ace, who is 1-2 with a 5.73 ERA in three starts since a rain-interrupted July 26 no-hit bid.

TWINS: Duensing was impressive against the Indians on Saturday, striking out a career-high nine batters and allowing just three runs on nine hits over 6 2/3 innings. But he was saddled with the hard-luck loss to drop his third straight decision.

Friday, August 19 at Target Field | 8:10 PM ET

Phil Hughes, RHP (3-4, 6.55 ERA)

Kevin Slowey, RHP (0-0, 4.91 ERA)

    Scouting Report:

YANKEES: Hughes draws the call against the Twins after picking up a win in his last start, when he held the Rays to two runs in six innings. He is 3-3 with a 4.28 ERA in seven games since returning from the disabled list in early July.

TWINS: Slowey was slated to make his first start of the season against the Indians on Sunday, but saw it washed away by rain after just two innings. So he'll take another crack at making his first start of the season, this time at Target Field against the Yankees.

Saturday, August 20 at Target Field | 7:10 PM ET

    TBA

Francisco Liriano, LHP (8-9, 5.12 ERA)

    Scouting Report:

YANKEES: The Yankees’ rotation is a little up in the air for Saturday and Sunday. It all depends on Garcia’s finger, if it’s healed and allows him to throw his splitter, then he’s likely to start Sunday with Burnett going the day before. If not, then Freddy might hit the DL with Nova filling in. No one will be on short rest regardless of what happens, so don’t worry about that.

TWINS: Liriano limited his walk total against the Tigers on Monday, issuing just one free pass, but fell behind in the count a few times, and allowed two homers as a result. He allowed five runs on nine hits over six innings, but picked up the win.

Sunday, August 21 at Target Field | 2:10 PM ET

    TBA

Nick Blackburn, RHP (7-10, 4.53 ERA)

    Scouting Report:

YANKEES: The Yankees’ rotation is a little up in the air for Saturday and Sunday. It all depends on Garcia’s finger, if it’s healed and allows him to throw his splitter, then he’s likely to start Sunday with Burnett going the day before. If not, then Freddy might hit the DL with Nova filling in. No one will be on short rest regardless of what happens, so don’t worry about that.

TWINS: Blackburn struggled against the Tigers on Tuesday, surrendering five runs on 11 hits and two walks over 4 2/3 frames. It marked the seventh time this year that the sinkerballer allowed 10 hits or more in a start, most in the Majors.

As expected, Alex Rodriguez is not in the lineup or even on the roster tonight against the Twins. He is here, though, and pregame he went through fairly intense fielding drills with Mick Kelleher standing behind him at third base. Rob Thomson basically stood at the plate, took soft tosses from about three feet away, and pulled sharp ground balls and line drives to Rodriguez on the left side of the infield.

ARod hoping for weekend return. Says first-step quickness is still lacking on defense. Feels he could be in better shape. #nyy
