I'll try to explain myself on this topic.

When an athlete body matures early it could mean that he's enjoying success (tools in this case) because he developed faster not because they have more raw athletic talent. It also could mean that a prospect doesn't have much physical projection. Some scouts are a bit concerned about it but is not really a huge concern, just a thought. It's obviously way to early to judge and being 17 and playing in the appy league makes it even harder because he's playing against college dudes.

I agree. It feels like a stretch to find concerns about Maitan to temper expectations. I wouldn't say I think it is a "major" concern. I just think it is a plausible concern.

Even if Maitan is an "early maturer", I think he is still destined to be really good. He has the size, athleticism, and tools already. It really depends on his ability to make adjustments, as Vikings already said.

This is what I'm thinking too. Pump the breaks just a bit while the works through some early career struggles.

Exactly. I won't completely dismiss the concern, but I am not going to lose faith in the kid, either.

According to this article Maitan is already 6'2" and "at least" 220, maybe that's why scouts are concerned?

I've watched plenty of Maitan at bats and bp videos when I can get them. Yes, he's big but he's still fluid at the plate. Everyone knew he'd grow out of Shortstop. Personally, I think the hamstring has hurt him in the eyes of scouts because it makes it look like his athleticism is limited and they blame it on his size.

Could be but it depends what type of weight he's gained. I'm sure this is the first time he's ever been around a legit strength staff so I'm sure he's put on muscle mass. I also wonder if adjusting to the life in the US makes a difference for him. I have no idea what life is like in Venezuela but I'm sure he's experiencing luxuries in the US that he never had before. The US is a great place to get fat. A 6'2 17 year old superior athlete probably eats like a horse. Hopefully he's being given proper nutritional guidance for when he's away from the team. As long as he is kept far away from Pablo Sandoval he should be fine lol

Yeah, everything you said here is true, this year for Maitan consist on getting used to his new surrounds, next year is when we start to worry about his stats.

Man, this is the guy that will accelerate our rebuild. After he's playing the outfield, our lineup will be just 1-2 pieces away.

Agreed. Inciarte, Albies, Swanson, Acuna, and Freeman will be the main pieces. Hard to ask for a better starting block than that. 1 more big piece and we'll be a scary line up. It's a pipe dream but adding Machado in that group would be icing on the cake.

With Machado all we would need is continued development from Newk and Folty and we'd be golden assuming someone else steps up out of out multitude of starters. Obviously Machado is like a 1% chance, but that'd be so huge.
