Acuna is getting more intriguing by the day. Can't wait to see him in ATL! Andrew was one of my favorites for a long time; Acuna may be the replacement I have been waiting for (although I do love Freddie).

Wentz has gone 12 straight starts without allowing more than 2 earned runs. His ERA is down to 2.19, which leads the South Atlantic League. I've read some scouts think he may be our best pitching prospects.

What do you guys think is more important: giving Acuna a taste of the big leagues or keeping that 40 man spot open to protect another prospect? I'm torn. The guy is absolutely destroying baseballs and deserves the call up but I'd hate to see us lose a prospect like Patrick Weigel. I'm still leaning towards wanting to stay in the minors but he is making it more difficult with each passing day.

    A few factors with Acuna:

    1) 40 man Roster: Do you call him up before the end of the season, meaning ATL has to protect him?

    2) Extra year of team control: Does ATL wait 3 weeks (give or take) next year before promoting Acuna? That would ensure ATL got a 4th arbitration year out of him as a Super 2. This is the Kris Bryant/Bryce Harper treatment.

    3) Does ATL wait another 6 weeks (give or take) and call Acuna up in June, basically giving up half of a season of Acuna to keep control for the same amount of years as #2 above AND control his salary by only giving him 3 ARB years instead of 4.

    4) Acuna stays down this year and starts next year in ATL. This leaves the 40 man roster spot open in the offseason, but blows Acuna's 4th year of ARB.

My best guess is #3 is out. ATL would not have pushed him all the way to AAA and then leave him there for half of next year.

That leaves scenario #1, #2, or #4. At this point none of these would surprise me. I hope it is #2. That gives ATL a chance to move Marky or Kemp in the offseason to make room for Acuna. It also gives ATL an extra year of control because Acuna won't get the 173 days in MLB that he needs. It also allows ATL to leave a 40 man roster spot for someone else. That just seems like the best scenario for balancing team control and Acuna being ready.

Waiting 3 weeks to start next year is more than reasonable.

Good post. I like option 2 as well. It's gotta be super tempting for the FO to want to call him up but waiting is probably best.
