I always disliked the word "slugger". Let's use the word production. Dunn is a more productive hitter then Ichiro - with room to spare. Yes Ichiro has a much higher BA, and a similar OBP, but his SLG is low, and Dunn's isn't (even with 2011 included). Obviously in the other facets of the game Ichiro has Dunn by a mile. Many years that Dunn played, I recall he was in the top 30 in MLB in OPS+. He was around 80th all time OPS after his fine '10 season. His fielding at 1B even improved in 2009 and 2010, so that if he stayed in the NL, played 1B, got a few days off in hot weather, and had a friendly HR park to play in, there was a good shot for 550 HR.
But he came to the AL where the pitching patterns are much more erratic then the NL, a whole new host of pitchers to learn, and with that upper cut swing sometimes the tall heavy sluggers lose it fast.
The big donkey may not prove the doubters wrong this time, but his overall career was certainly notable as a hitter.
