    One more piece to add?

After looking at our roster and capspace (info via capgeek) flyers have about 3.3 mil left. thats not including putting Lappy on LTIR and burying Shelly in the minors. That would put us at about 5.5 mil.

We could use another d-man. Im thinking Anton Babchuk. he signed a one year contract last year for 1.4 mil.

And i think we could use another winger. Available free agents worth noting.

    Antti Miettinen
    Jamie Langenbrunner

I think we could get any one of these guys for 1.5.

If we got 2 of them that would put us at 2.5 mil under the cap.
Thats a nice cusion for AHL call-ups and give us some room to possibly make a move at the trade deadline.

    What do you guys think?

Roster full - unless there is a block-buster that would necessitate moving Carle and Schenn.

    Hartnell - Briere - Voracek
    vanRiemsdyk - Giroux - Jagr
    Talbot - Schenn - Simmonds
    Rinaldo/Sestito - Betts - Nodl

    Carle - Pronger
    Timonen - Coburn
    Bartulis - Meszaros
    Lilja

    Bryzgalov
    Bobrovsky

This 20 player roster leaves 1.5 M in Excess Cap Space after the very important 2 M Saved Cap Space for in-season call-ups.

Giroux feeding Jagr and Voracek feeding Briere - awesome!

This is about the 4th thread we have going on what may be next . . . .

If we look at it from a "goals" standpoint -

Last season the Flyers were 3rd in the NHL in Goals Scored with 256, behind Detroit (257) and league leader Vancouver (258).

Not including the peripheral players (like 4th liners which will tend to cancel-out), here is the comparison of estimated goals lost and estimated goals gained with this new team:

    Hartnell - Briere - Voracek
    vanRiemsdyk - Giroux - Jagr
    Talbot - Schenn - Simmonds
    Rinaldo/Sestito - Betts - Nodl

    Carle - Pronger
    Timonen - Coburn
    Bartulis - Meszaros
    Lilja

    Bryzgalov
    Bobrovsky

    Goals Lost

    40 Carter
    25 Richards
    20 Leino
    16 Zherdev
    07 Versteeg

    108 Total Goals Lost

    Goals Gained

    25 Jagr
20 Voracek, will have much better line-mates – Giroux and JVR
20 Simmonds, with line-mates Schenn and Talbot
20 Schenn, hardest to predict in his rookie season, but can be prolific
    12 Talbot, playing with Schenn

    05 Giroux additional, from 25 to 30
    09 vanRiemsdyk additional, from 21 (75 games) to 30
05 Defencemen additional with Power Play greatly improved

    116 Total Goals Gained

This team will be very good in the goal scoring department. No need to worry.

No need to speculate on needing another forward for scoring purposes.

This Flyers' team may be in the NHL top 3 in "goals" again.

And, the team's forwards are now a good mix of:

    1) goal scorers
    2) set-up, assist players
    3) power-forwards (size)
    4) muckers and grinders (size)
    5) back-checkers with good defensive responsibility

Unless the block-buster deal emerges, no need to get another forward.

Simmonds is in the Cap numbers mentioned. It's estimated at 1.5 M.

If he signs for more, the Excess Cap Space of 1.5 M is there to cover it.

    I haven't posted anything in a while .. been kind of soaking up all that's happened in the last 2 weeks. Bu I must say, now that the dust has somewhat settled; I like the way the team looks right now. We have a lot of grit combined with talent. I'm excited for the next 3-5 years. However, we are still lacking in 3 very important areas;

    1. Faceoffs
    2. Right handed dmen (NONE!)
    3. Toughness on D

One move I'd definitely make and isn't a stretch at all is; sign Zenon Konopka. This guy fills two roles...tough guy and faceoff specialist...and we should be able to get him on the cheap.

The other move I'd attempt to make is; see what it'll take to get Bogosian from the Jets. They currently have a very capable top 4 of Buffy, Hainsey, Enstrom, and Oduya with Jones and Stuart as 3rd pairing spares.

Other than that, I'm ready to see the season start.

P.S. Keep your stick on the ice

Listening to TSN radio, they said Konopka has locker room troubles. I know little about him, but if its true than he wont be coming to the flyers.

and the Jets more than likely wont trade Bogosian till the deadline when the price is higher.

Ew on Konopka anyways. He's an awful fighter. He's Riley Cote when it comes to dropping the gloves, he just does it all the damn time.

    Skip him and move on.

Yes. Good points on Konopka. Several others here have posted on Konopka. With his assets, the 30 year old would fill that final 4th line spot rather than rookies Rinaldo or Sestito.

The question that GM Holmgren may be asking himself, and his gang-of-5, is - in this season's drive for the Cup, do we add one more veteran with the NHL proven attributes of Konopka, and can we get him for a 1-year contract at a low Cap Hit?

Or, do we go with one of the young guns - Rinaldo or Sestito?

As you pointed out, perhaps the biggest Konopka asset that is needed by this Flyers' team is his face-off skill.

    Here is his profile:

    C/LW
    Zenon Konopka
    UFA
    Age: 30
Date of birth: January 02, 1981
Place of birth: Niagara Falls, Ont, Canada
    Ht: 6-0 Wt: 211
    Shoots: L
    Salary: $600,000
    NHL Seasons: 6
    Signed by Pittsburgh in 2002.
Acquired as a free agent in 2010.

ASSETS: Comes to play every night and isn't afraid of dishing out punishment. Possesses sound defensive acumen and plays with energy. Can drop the gloves and is also very good on face-offs.

FLAWS: Is limited in the offensive zone and only suited for a fourth-line role. Must avoid taking too many bad penalties that place his team in a tough spot.

CAREER POTENTIAL: Versatile, tough depth forward.

Thinking about Poultsy's good advice: "keep your stick on the ice" -

    - we are reminded that Jagr and Voracek are
    sooooo good at puck-possession . . . . .

With Jagr, Voracek, and Simmonds, GM Holmgren has added size and strength on the wings.

The team has gone from 2 big wingers (Hartnell and vanRiemsdyk) to 5 big wingers.

The trigger - in the playoffs, the big Boston forwards out-hit, out-mucked, out-worked, out-muscled, and wore-down the Flyers forwards.

    It won't happen again . . . . . . . . .

Lets hope so, but is it sad I'm getting excited about a burnt-out Arnott joining the Flyers?

If it was that easy, he'd be signed. I also think you may be a little generous with Jagr's numbers. We cannot predict how that crackpot will meld with the flyboys' locker room and if he will even last the season on this team.

I would like to see the flyers sign simmonds, arnott and babchuk, and trade carle.
We could use some offense from the blue line and babchuk has a massive shot from the point(scoring 27 goals the last 2 seasons) and needless to say carle doesnt provide that. we have enough puck moving d men.

Make these moves and the flyers are unquestionably better than last years team. And definately built to win.

    JVR Giroux Jagr
    Hartnell Briere Voracek
    Talbot/schenn Arnott Simmonds
    Nodl Schenn/Talbot Betts

    Pronger Coburn
    Timonen Babchuk
    Mez Lilja

    Bryz
    Bob

    Would be awesome

Agree completely. Schenn is better than Arnott right now, and he's never played in the NHL. Arnott can be a quality third center for some teams, but this is not one of them.
