NEW YORK • Cardinals starting pitcher Kyle Lohse left the team Thursday morning to return to St. Louis and have a finger on his pitching hand examined by the team's physician.
Manager Tony La Russa called it "a finger issue," but added that he wasn't sure of the specific details of the injury.
Lohse does not have a blister on his finger.
General manager John Mozeliak said the team would have a better understanding of the pitcher's discomfort on Friday morning, after the doctor is given time to examine the hand. Lohse is scheduled to start Sunday for the Cardinals in Pittsburgh.
