Lewis, Gordon, etal --2018 Minor Leaguers

Tonight, Rochester finally got their season underway after 3 weather-related postponements over the weekend, losing 2-1 to Syracuse. Jake Cave was 1/5 with a run scored. Gregorio Petit was 2/4. Aaron Slegers allowed a run on 5 hits, a walk and 1 K in 6 innings. Tyler Duffey gave up an unearned run on no hits or walks in 3 innings with 1 K.
Chattanooga (2-3) beat Birmingham 5-2 behind Kohl Stewart's strong 5 innings. He gave up a run on 3 hits with 9 Ks. Brent Rooker and LaMonte Wade were each 3/4 with a run scored. Chris Paul scored a couple of runs, going 1/4. Ryne Harper struck out the only hitter he faced picking up the save.
Ft Myers (3-2) beat the Florida Fire Frogs (Braves' affiliate) 6-4. Travis Blankenhorn was 3/4 with a double, a triple and 2 runs scored. Jimmy Kerrigan was 2/3 with a homer and 2 RBI. Cody Stashak blew the save, but picked up the win, giving up 2 runs on 1 hit, 2 walks and 3 Ks in 2 innings. Alex Robinson picked up his 2nd save walking 1 and striking out 4 in 2 shutout innings.
Cedar Rapids (3-0) beat Peoria 3-1. 3B Andrew Bechtold was 3/4 with 2 runs scored. Ben Rortvedt was 2/4 with 2 RBI. RF Mark Contreras was 2/4 with a double and 1 driven in. Blayne Enlow gave up a run on 7 hits, 2 walks and 2 Ks in 4.1 innings. Kevin Marnon picked up his 1st win, allowing a walk and 2 hits while striking out 1 in 2.2 innings. Jared Finkel picked up his first save giving up 4 hits in 2 shutout innings. Alex Kirilloff, Royce Lewis and Akil Badoo are each off to slow starts, but its early and very cold. I'm looking forward to seeing these guys a bit this summer, but I need to get over to CR relatively soon to see Lewis before he goes up to Ft Myers.
Looks like some decent talent in the farm system this summer, and Wander Javier is waiting in extended spring to get enough ABs and reps in the field as SS.

Rochester lost again -- 3-2 to Syracuse. Zack Granite was 2-5 with a stolen base. Nick Buss was 2/3 with a double, a run scored and a stolen base. Gregorio Petit was 2/4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Adalberto Mejia started the game and left after 2 innings -- not sure just now why. If I find out I'll post it here. He allowed no runs on 1 hit, 1 walk and 1 K. Fernando Romero allowed 2 unearned runs on 5 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings. He struck out 3. Alan Busenitz gave up a run on 2 hits with 2 Ks in 1 inning to take the loss.
    Chattanooga had the night off.
Ft Myers lost a pitcher's duel 1-0 to Florida. Sean Poppen started for the Miracle, allowing no runs on 3 hits with 7 Ks in 4 innings. Colton Davis took the loss, giving up an unearned run on 2 hits and 4 Ks in 3 innings. Jaylin Davis doubled in 3 ABs and Jared Foster was 2/3.
Cedar Rapids beat Peoria 8-6 to keep their unbeaten streak intact at 4 wins. Royce Lewis was 1/5 with a run scored and 1 driven in. Alex Kirilloff was 2/5 with a double and 3 driven in. Trey Cabbage was 2/4 with 2 doubles, 2 scored and 2 driven in. Mark Contreras was 2/4 with a run scored and 1 driven in. The star of the game was Ben Rortvedt. He was 4/4 with 2 doubles and 2 runs scored.

Tonight, Rochester lost another, extending their season opening losing streak to 3. Syracuse beat the Red Wings 7-1. Granite, Cave, Leonardo Reginatto, and Brock Stassi got the only hits for the "good-guys", with Cave homering to account for their only run. Detrich Enns gave up 4 runs on 9 hits, 2 walks and 2 Ks in 3.2 innings to take the loss.
Chattanooga lost to Pensacola 6-5 with a 9th inning rally coming up a run short. Zander Weil was 2/3 with 2 doubles and 2 runs scored. TJ White hit a 3-run homer in the 9th inning rally. Zack Littell gave up 3 runs on 6 hits, 1 walk and 10 Ks in 4 innings to take the loss.
Ft Myers won 9-0 over Florida with Anthony Marzi allowing no runs on 4 hits and 5 Ks in 6.1 innings. logan Lombada finished the game, giveing up 2 hits and striking out 2 in 2.2 innings. Kerrigan was 2/5 with a double, a homer, 2 scored and 4 driven in. Mitchell Kranson was 3/4 with 1 scored and 2 driven in. Alex Perez was 2/4 with 2 scored.
Cedar Rapids used the long ball to beat Peoria 12-9 tonight to extend their streak to 5 games. Kirilloff was 3/5 with 2 homers, 2 scored and 6 driven in. Ben Rodriguez was 3/5 with a homer, a double, 2 scored and 2 driven in. David Banuelos was 2/5 with a solo homer. Randy Dobnak started the game and gave up 8 runs on 10 hits, 2 walks and 1 K in 3.2 innings. Calvin Faucher allowed 1 hit, 1 walk and 4 Ks in 2.1 innings to pick up the win. Ryan Mason earned his 2nd save, allowing a run on 3 hits and 3 Ks in 3 innings.
2-1 for the farm. Rochester has too much talent to go much longer without a win, but it is really cold in the Northeast.

Tonight, Rochester picked up their first win of the season, taking a 14 inning affair over Gwinnett 7-6. Cave was 4/6 with an RBI. Willians Astudillo was 2/6 with a run scored, 2 driven in and a stolen base. Nick Buss was 2/6 with 2 scored. John Curtiss struck out 4 in 2 tidy innings. Myles Jaye started the game and allowed 3 runs (the only earned runs the Red Wings allowed) on 7 hits with 1 K in 5.2 innings. Tyler Duffey allowed an unearned run on 1 hit with 3 Ks in 1.1 innings to pick up the win.
If Willians Astudillo can hit, he could be the heir apparent to Jason Castro's job behind the plate. I saw a couple of spring training games on TV and it looks like he is an excellent catcher with very soft hands. Very quiet behind the plate.
Chattanooga lost 3-0 to Pensacola, only getting 5 hits. Ryan Walker, Zander Weil, Winston Sawyer, Brian Navaretto, and Sean Miller each got singles for the Lookouts. Stephen Gonsalves started the game and gave up no runs on 3 hits, 3 walks and 5 Ks in 4 innings and did not figure in the decision. Sam Clay allowed 2 runs on 3 hits and a walk while striking out 3 in 1.2 innings to take the loss.
Ft Myers won 8-2 over Florida. Lewin Diaz was 2/4 with a double, a homer, 1 scored and 3 driven in. Kerrigan was 2/3 with a run scored. Kranson was 1/3 with a double, 2 scored and 2 driven in. Tyler Wells gave up a solo homer, a walk and struck out 8 in 5 innings to earn his first win.
Cedar Rapids continued their hot start scoring 9 runs after the 5th inning. They beat Peoria 9-5 with Akil Badoo, Royce Lewis and Alex Kirilloff each going 2/4. Badoo had a triple, Kirilloff a double and Lewis a 3-run homer. Mark Contreras was 3/3 with a double, 2 scored and 2 driven in.
These, coupled with the win in the bigs, made it a pretty good night for the franchise.

Last night, Rochester won an 11 inning game 6-4 over Gwinnett and the best prospect in the Braves's system Ronald Acuna. For the Red Wings, Gregorio Petit was 2/5 with 2 scored and a stolen base. Jermaine Curtis was 3/4 with a double. Taylor Featherston drove in 2 with a pair of doubles and a stolen base. Brock Stassi was 2/5 with a double, 1 scored and 1 driven in. Kennys Vargas was 2/6 with a run scored and 1 driven in. DJ Baxendale started the game and allowed 2 hits and struck out 1 in 3 innings. Mason Melotakis picked up the win giving up a hit and striking out 1 in 1.2 innings.
Chattanooga won 3-2 over Pensacola with Nick Gordon going 2/5 with a triple, a run scored and 1 driven in. Zander Weil was 2/4 with an RBI and Chris Paul was 2/4. Randy LeBlanc (1-1, 2.70) gave up a run on 3 hits, 4 walks and 4 Ks in 5 innings to earn the win. Williams Ramirez picked up the save giving up a single and striking out a pair in a scoreless inning.
Ft Myers lost 4-0 to Tampa with Mitchell Kranson getting a double in 4 ABs. Starter Charlie Barnes (0-2, 5.79) gave up a run on 4 hits, 2 walks and 5 Ks in 4.2 innings to take the loss.
Cedar Rapids got their game in before the rains came and lost 2-0. Royce Lewis and Shane Carrier got the 2 singles for the Kernels. Bryan Sammons (0-1, 0.96) gave up a run on 4 hits, 3 walks and 3 Ks in 5.1 innings to take the loss. I do not expect the Kernels to play this today, as it is raining pretty hard right now, but we'll see.
    2-2 for the farm.

Rochester won another close game over Gwinnett, 4-2. Aaron Slegers started the game and pitched 6 shutout innings, allowing 3 hits while striking out 5 to earn the win. Ryan LaMarre wasted no time, going 2/3 with an RBI. Brock Stassi hit a solo homer for the Red Wings. Gregorio Petit was 2/4 with a triple and 2 scored.
Chattanooga beat Pensacola 3-2, using a 3-run 5th inning to pick up the win. Nick Gordon was 2/4 with an RBI and his 2nd stolen base. LaMonte Wade was 2/4 with 2 driven in. Todd VanSteensel gave up no runs on 1 hit in 2 innings of relief for the win. He struck out 1. Lewis Thorpe allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits and 4Ks in 4 innings, but did not figure in the decision.
Ft Myers used a good rehab start by Phil Hughes (5 IP, 3 Hits, 5 Ks) to beat Tampa 5-4. Hughes got the win. Aaron Whitefield was 2/4 with a double and a run scored. Jimmy Kerrigan was 2/4 with a double and 2 runs scored.
As I figured, Cedar Rapids' game was postponed due to inclement weather, so 3-0 for the farm.

Today, I built a snowman, and I live about 50 miles west of the Cedar Rapids Kernels' ballpark, so they were not likely to play a game in this mess. Rochester was postponed as well.
Chattanooga beat Pensacola 5-4 on homers by Ryan Walker, TJ White and Winston Sawyer. Walker was 1/5 with 1 RBI, White was 2/3 with 3 RBI and Sawyer was 1/4 with 1 RBI. Zander Weil was 3/4 with a double and 2 scored. Kohl Stewart (2-0, 3.48) started the game and gave up 3 runs on 3 hits, a walk and 5 Ks to pick up the win. Williams Ramirez struck out the only batter he faced to earn his 2nd save.
Tampa beat Ft Myers 6-1 in a rain-shortened game. The Miracle only managed 3 hits in the 6.5 innings, all singles. Aaron Whitefield (1/3), Jimmy Kerrigan (1/3 with a run) and Caleb Hamilton (1/2) got the hits. Clark Beeker gave up 3 runs on 4 hits, a walk and 1 K in 2 innings to take the loss.
1-1 for the farm with Mother Nature taking the other 2.

Tonight's schedule was short anyway, but the weather took Chattanooga's game away.
Rochester won 6-3 with Tyler Duffey (2-1, 0.00) picked up the win giving up 1 hit while striking out 6 in 3.1 innings. He relieved Fernando Romero who allowed 2 runs on 4 hits, 3 walks and 4 Ks in 4.2 innings. Kennys Vargas was 2/3 with a double, a homer and 3 RBI. Zack Granite was 1/4 with 2 scored.
The weather is going to be "interesting" here in Iowa this week, but I hope to go to the game in Cedar Rapids on Friday evening.

Cedar Rapids was supposed to play at Beloit, but the weather had other plans. We're still on for Friday, if the weather cooperates here in Iowa.
    1-2 for the farm.

Chattanooga took a pair from Jacksonville 12-3 and 3-2. In game 1, 4 homers and 2 triples led the offense. LaMonte Wade was 2/3 with a triple, a homer 3 scored and 2 driven in. Brent Rooker was 1/4 with a homer and 2 RBI. Zander Weil was 3/3 with 2 doubles, a homer, 3 scored and 3 driven in. Sean Miller was 2/4 with a homer, 2 scored and 2 driven in. Nick Gordon was 2/4 with a double, 2 scored and 1 driven in. Stephen Gonsalves (2-0, 1.76) gave up 3 runs on 4 hits, 2 walks and 8 Ks in 6 innings for the win.
In game 2, Nick Gordon was 2/3 with a solo homer. Ryan Eades started the game and gave up a run on 4 hits, a walk and 6 Ks in 3.2 innings. Omar Bencomo (1-0, 1.00) gave up a run on 4 hits and 4 Ks in 3.1 innings to earn the win.

Cedar Rapids was "weathered out" again in Beloit.

Last night, Adalberto Mejia gave up 4 runs in the top of the first and the team shut the Clippers down after that. In the bottom of the 1st, The Red Wings sent 12 batters to the plate, scoring 8 runs. Brock Stassi hit a grand slam followed immediately by a solo shot by Taylor Featherston. Willians Astudillo was 4/4 with a double, a homer, 2 scored and 2 driven in. Gregorio Petit was 2/4 with a double and 3 driven in. Mejia gave up 4 runs on 5 hits, 2 walks and 5 Ks in 4 innings. Tyler Duffey (3-1, 0.00) allowed a hit and a walk while striking out 4 in 3 innings to earn the win.
Chattanooga lost 5-1 with Brent Rooker tripling in the 1st inning, followed by a SF by Nick Gordon. Unfortunately, that was all the offense the Lookouts could muster. Gordon was 1/3. Lewis Thorpe (0-2, 5.79) gave up 4 runs on 6 hits with 8 Ks in 5.2 innings to take the loss.
Ft Myers beat Bradenton 4-3 with Taylor Grzelakowski going 2/3 with a double, 1 scored and 1 driven in. Jaylin Davis was 2/4 with a double and a run scored. Charlie Barnes started the game and gave up no runs on a hit, 3 walks and 6 Ks in 3 innings. Andro Cutura (1-0, 2.25) blew the save, but picked up the win. He allowed a run on 4 hits, 2 walks and 5 Ks in 4 innings.
We attended the Cedar Rapids Kernels game against the Kane County Cougars and witnessed a very interesting game. I noticed that a lot of the players have struck out more than 1/3 of their ABs thusfar and saw some very long swings. Kids were definitely swinging for the fences. The weather was cool and the ball didn't carry well. The Kernels lost the game 5-2. Blayne Enlow (0-1, 5.00) started the game and gave up 4 runs on 8 hits, 2 walks and 3 Ks in 4.2 innings. Shane Carrier was 2/4 and Akil Badoo accounted for the Kernels' scoring going 2/4 with a homer and 2 driven in. Alex Kirilloff was 1/4 and Royce Lewis was 0/4. Lewis, by the way, signs autographs for about 5 minutes before the game and 10 minutes after the game, so if you want to get one, you have to be in the right place at the right time. I'll try on a Sunday, as they have had the entire team on the field signing autographs after Sunday games. Last night was Lewis' bobblehead night and we got a couple of them. I want him to sign his bobblehead for me.
    2-2 for the farm.

Last night, Rochester lost to Columbus 4-3 in 10 innings. Aaron Slegers (2.00) started the game for the Red Wings and gave up 3 runs on 7 hits and 4 Ks in 6 innings. Nick Anderson (1.29) allowed 2 hits and struck out 3 in 2 scoreless innings and Mason Melotakis (1-1, 4.05) allowed an unearned run on 3 hits, a walk and 2 Ks in 2 innings to suffer the loss. Nick Buss was 2/5 with 2 runs scored. Leonardo Reginatto was 2/5 with a double and 2 driven in. Jake Cave was 2/5 with an RBI. Gregorio Petit was 1/4 with a run scored. I wonder if he is being considered as trade-bait, as he is not on the 40-man roster and is hitting pretty well this spring.
Chattanooga lost 13-2 with Kohl Stewart (2-1, 7.50) giving up 7 runs (6 earned) on 6 hits, a walk and 1 K in 1.2 innings to take the loss. Brent Rooker was 2/4 with a double and a run scored. Nick Gordon was 1/3 with an RBI.
Ft Myers lost 5-3 with Jimmy Kerrigan continuing his hot start. He was 2/5 with a pair of doubles and saw his BA drop a point. Aaron Whitefield was 3/3 with a run scored, a stolen base and 1 caught stealing. Hector Lujan (0-1, 7.00) gave up 3 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits and 2 Ks to take the loss.
Cedar Rapids lost 9-2 with Royce Lewis going 4/4 with 2 runs scored. Jose Miranda was 2/4 and Alex Kirilloff was 1/4 with a double and an RBI. Nick Brown (4.00) started the game and gave up no runs on 4 hits and a walk while striking out 4 in 4.1 innings. He was not involved in the decision. Jose Martinez (0-1, 15.43) allowed 7 runs (5 earned) on 4 hits and 2 walks in 1.1 innings to take the loss.
Overall, yesterday was not a good day for the franchise, with an 0-5 record.

Clark Beeker (3.75) started the game and allowed an unearned run on 2 hits, 2 walks and 2 Ks in 5 innings. Andrew Vasquez (0-1, 2.00) blew his 2nd save, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits, 3 walks and 1K in 1.2 innings.
Cedar Rapids kept the franchise from being swept again today with a 7-0 win over Kane County. Today was another bad day for the franchise.
Rochester split a double header, losing game 1 1-0 and winning the nightcap 2-1. In game 1, the offense managed singles by Vargas, Stassi and Buss and Dietrich Enns (0-3, 5.79) gave up a run on 2 hits, 4 walks and 4 Ks in a complete game loss. In game 2, Leonardo Reginatto was 2/3 with a double and 1 driven in. DJ Baxendale (0.00) allowed 2 hits and struck out 2 in 4 innings, but did not figure in the decision. John Curtiss (1-0, 3.86) gave up the run on a hit and a walk along with 2 Ks in 2 innings, but picked up the win. Casey Crosby (0.00, 1 save) allowed a hit and struck 1 out in his inning to get the save.
That was about as good as it got for the franchise tonight.

Zack Littell (0-2, 5.89) took the loss, giving up 6 runs on 7 hits, a walk and 4 Ks in 4.1 innings. TJ White drove in a pair with a double in 3 ABs.
Ft Myers lost to Clearwater 5-3 with Sean Poppen (2.63) starting the game. He gave up no runs on 5 hits, a walk and 5 Ks in 4.2 innings. Max Cordy (0-1, 8.68) allowed 4 runs on 5 hits and 1 K in 1 inning to suffer the loss. Lewin Diaz was 2/4 with a triple and 1 driven in. Jimmy Kerrigan was 1/4 with a double and 1 driven in. Travis Blankenhorn was 1/3 with a 2-run homer.
Cedar Rapids lost 13-5 in a game I almost went to see tonight. Bryan Sammons (0-2, 3.95) allowed 6 runs (5 earned) on 8 hits and 5 Ks in 4.1 innings. Akil Badoo was 4/5 with 2 runs scored and 1 driven in. Alex Kirilloff was 3/5 with a 3-run homer. Royce Lewis was 1/5 with a run scored and 1 driven in.
    1-5 for the farm.

Gwinnett's Ronald Acuna was 2/4 with a double and a run scored. He is hitting a a bit better and could get called up to the Braves soon.
Chattanooga beat Jackson 2-1 behind Stephen Gonsalves' 5 IP, 4 hits, 1 run, 2 walks and 9 Ks. He is 3-0, 1.77. Zack Jones (2.08) loaded the bases on 2 walks and 1 hit, but struck out the side to get his 4th hold. Tyler Jay (0.00) allowed a hit in a scoreless inning to get his 2nd hold. 2-2 for the farm.
