I've been reading "A Peoples History of the United States" on and off for years. It's incredibly good and I highly recommend it.

You can see these news excerpts from the late 1800s where the working class is complaining about excessive hours and working conditions for horrible pay while owners get richer. They cause to strike and unionize and journalists call them out as communists/socialists and a threat to America and capitalism.

They call out the 1% getting richer while the majority of workers can't afford to feed their families.

Funny how 100+ years later its the same old problems. Makes me feel like all this debating and fighting over politics and social structures is even more pointless than I thought.

Things won't change, so just see the world and enjoy life.

It's a great read and should be required reading for every high school history course.

For example, Social Security (which didn't exist a hundred years ago) lifted 20 million Americans out of poverty, including 1 million children. That's a big change for the better. Granted victories may be few and far between, but that doesn't necessarily mean nothing changes. And besides, things change for the worse all time time. . .

Just finished "The Undiscovered Self", by Carl Jung. Just started "On the Origin of Species" by Darwin. Not extremely political books but recommended reading, nonetheless.

I just finished Michael Specter's Denialism, pretty fascinating stuff.

The book is basically divided into 6 parts with the general theme being people's denial towards whatever that part is on.

Part 1 deals with fears of Big Pharma
Part 2 deals with fears about Vaccines
Part 3 deals with why Organic Food isn't that great
Part 4 deals with why taking supplements is basically worthless
Part 5 deals with Race and health
Part 6 deals with Genetics and the fear associated with it.

It's a pretty short and simple read and it's also very eye opening.

Going through the Hunger Games trilogy now (2/3s done with book 2)......not political at all, but discussing books in any other forum on here is pretty useless.

I would strongly recomend "A People's History of the United States" and "Atlas Shrugged" in order to understand the perspective of both sides of the political perspective.

I finished the first book. I thought it was very good. All of my friends think I'm crazy when I tell them it was a great book.

Not exactly on the educational level as those but I recommend reading "Starship Troopers" and "The Forever War" back to back.

Really awesome to read the contrary views on the Vietnam war expressed through fiction.

starship trooper's is a great book. as is "the moon is a harsh mistress" also by robert heinlein.

The forever war blows as a book. The philosophical point he makes is pretty good, but the story itself isn't very good. Heinlein is a much better writer than Haldeman.

I just finished reading Merchants of Doubt, it is a very interesting book and it talks about the forces behind climate change politics along with tobacco and other scientific issues that have been made political.

anyone ever read a H.S. History book from the U.K.?

I wonder how different their version of the American Revolution is than what's in our books.

i was always told NEVER believe a history book causes it's "HIS story" not fact.
