I can understand that, hence the reason I play in my free jazz/noise duo. I still am always looking to be part the perfectly written song.

putting together a law school band right now for some musical release form the monotony of studying and reading cases all the goddamn time

first songs i'm trying to get everyone on board with (as the de facto band leader) is the ghost of tom joad (springsteen) and ballad of curtis loew (skynyrd).

ultimately, i'd like to be able to play a set list like this for our first gig:

curtis loew
nellie kane (bluegrass tune)
sweet virginia (stones)
sympathy for the devil (stones)
afro blue (coltrane version)
trouble no more (allmans)
babe i'm gonna leave you (zeppelin)
tom joad

i'd also like to incorporate prince's computer blue > darling nikki (one of my favorite 1-2 punches in musical history)

problem is, i can play all of these songs, but it's gonna take me forever to get everyone else on board. and with law school time restraints, it'll make it even harder.

Anyone got any advice for taking that next step into actually recording?

I've got a band and we have written like 4 complete songs but we have ideas and lyrics for like 20 more but it's hard to take that next step to actually start playing shows and getting an EP out there.

If you do not have any experience in the studio, first save up money and go with a good local engineer. That may be tough to choose, but usually it is good to pick someone who is familiar with your style. Do not waste your money on upstart studios and engineers. If they need to build their chops, you shouldn't be paying them for their service.

Then be sure you practice, practice, practice. Recording cost a good amount of money and you do not want to waste it. It is all about preproduction.

Live experience is key to really getting your material tight. It will also give you an idea if your songs are any good. For every show you play, it is worth about 10 rehearsals. It is why I am never as tight with a band than when I am on tour playing every night for a period of weeks. I do not care where you play. Set-up a show in your friends basement. It'll all help.

I would honestly wait until you have more songs solid to choose from. I would throw a quick digital recording together in your room using not much better than your Iphone. Hearing what you are doing helps develop your parts.

Once you chose your best songs, then it is time to break them down. First, decide on a tempo and rehearse to a click. This is most likely how you are going to record, so you might as well get use to it. Once everyone has their parts inside and out, then be sure whatever gear you are using is in its peak condition, be it fresh batteries, new heads etc. Unless your gear is complete crap, use what you are comfortable with. A lot of engineers try to push their gear on you because they are familiar with it and it makes it easier for them. If you are ultimately not comfortable, you will not perform well.

Ultimately, it all comes down to 3 things. How good are the songs? How good is the vocalist? How tight is the band? If you cannot answer all of those things positive, then get back in the basement. People do not care about the cool fill the drummer did or guitar player's tone if those 3 things are terrible.

his 1st one dropped about 2 months ago, recorded straight out of his room and we passed it around to the right people and I got him in touch with a friend who has a studio so everything it moving in the right direction

I was just ****in' around on audacity and mashed up a few biggie verses with RL Burnside's "shuck dub". The first 2 verses match up great but there is too much going on in the beat during the third verse. I'll make adjustments next time i get stoned and have my laptop with me LOL.
