Danny Ferry's name is being floated again this time like last year

I sent this text message to an NBA general manager: “Why would anyone take the Portland GM job and work for Paul Allen?” His texted response: “$$$.” A trusted NBA source insists the Trail Blazers have Spurs vice president of basketball operations Danny Ferry at, or near, the top of their list of candidates to replace their general manager, Rich Cho.

Ferry's track record is a bit cloudy. It is difficult to assess his work in Cleveland since he was working with a gun to his head the entire time, but our situation is becoming almost as comical as that one. I doubt he's interested though...

Warkentein was who I wanted last year, he's incredible with the salary cap. I'm fine with Petrie as well, he's just had some bad luck of late. His track record is pretty awesome, and he's got his jersey hanging from the rafters.

Ferry and Petrie would both be good. F Warkentein. I hate that guy.

The reality is that Buchanan is probably going to keep the job. I don't believe that winning is the most important thing to this franchise. That is making me sad.

Anyone that wants to bash KP or Cho is a fool. Neither have done anything but bust their tails for the franchise and put the team in the best possible position with the talent available.

Your premise doesn't make sense. If anything, Paul Allen and co. are trying too damn hard to win, and are seeking scapegoats for the follies. I also think that blindly praising Pritchard is foolish. He was a very good GM, but he had some serious issues with ego, and also had his fair share of misses as a GM. Cho on the other hand shouldn't be bashed, he simply wasn't the GM long enough to evaluate his work...which is why I don't understand the firing.

KP was horribly over rated. After he got canned he talked with several teams and not a single team talked to him a second time. Because they noticed other then drafting foreign players who never come over, KP can't do crap. Add in that he thinks he is god and everyone including owners should bow before him.

UPDATE: Former Blazer Terry Porter currently works on the television broadcasts for the team and he was asked if he has any interest in the general manager vacancy.

"I would love to sit down and talk with [the Blazers] about that," Porter told The Oregonian. "I know Larry [Miller] and everyone is working through the logistics of figuring out exactly what the criteria is for a GM candidate. When they get to that point, if I'm someone who fits with that, I'd love to talk. With my background and history with the Blazers, it would be a good opportunity."

Porter has been the head coach for Milwaukee and Phoenix and was fired from both teams.

UPDATE: John Canzano of The Oregonian offers another candidate for the Blazers on Thursday: "Whisper is Blazers looking early at Geoff Petrie for possible GM position."

This lines up with a suggestion from The Portland Tribune, noted here earlier.

    ---

The Blazers were interested in Danny Ferry last summer, but he opted to return to the San Antonio Spurs instead of becoming Portland's general manager.

The Blazers are in need of a general manager once again after Rich Cho was fired and reportedly Ferry will once again be a target of president Larry Miller and owner Paul Allen.

Mike Monroe of the San Antonio Express-News writes: "A trusted NBA source insists the Trail Blazers have Spurs vice president of basketball operations Danny Ferry at, or near, the top of their list of candidates to replace Cho."

Ferry chose stability over chaos last summer, so it's difficult to see him changing his mind now.

Why would anyone want to work for Allen?

"$$$," texted one general manager to Monroe.

I actually think that terry porter would be outstanding for the Portland Trailblazers. Him and Allen would definitely get along and he would be an absolute fan favorite being one of the blazer greats. Yes he dont not have successful stints as a coach but he understands this franchise and knows how great these fans are and how desperate they are for a winner. Also being a PG in his playing days i think he would understand how desperate we are for an upgrade their i think he would be a great guy to pull off a deal for someone of likes of ray felton or brandon Jennings. i think Steve Kerr would be another great candidate if they could not rope in anyone else

UPDATE No. 3: Rick Adelman was asked if he'd have any interest in the Blazers general manager position and he said he would.

"It's something I haven't done, but I think I know the league pretty well," he told The Portland Tribune. "I've worked for a number of GMs. I've always wanted to do something like that, but I've had pretty good success coaching. I would be very interested in trying something different, but I don't know what Paul Allen is looking for. It's kind of pie-in-the-sky at this point."

Adelman would be willing to discuss working for the Blazers in other areas, however he won't talk about coaching.

"I have no interest in the head coaching job," he says. "I need to make that clear. They have a really good coach [Nate McMillan]. Nate has done a great job."
