    Boxberger Promoted

Right-handed pitcher Brad Boxberger has been promoted to the Triple-A Louisville Bats. Boxberger, a 2009 supplemental first rounder out of USC, threw a perfect ninth inning Monday night for the Carolina Mudcats, striking out the side. Boxberger made 30 appearances out of the Mudcats bullpen, going 1-2 with a 1.31 ERA and 57 strikeouts. Righty Brandon Hynick will take the Southern League All-Star's place on the Mudcats roster.

Great I was wondering when he was going to get the call up. He seemed to be pitching very well every time he went in.

The Reds released minor league pitcher Ryan Smith, a nondrafted free agent who was signed in 2009.
The Reds released two more minor league pitchers, Tzu Kai-Chiu and Mike Henry. However, they signed nondrafted free agent pitcher Robert Lewis-Walker.

You realize Joey Votto will most likely be traded before the deadline right? So I don't know how you can say we will only be buyers. Cordero, BP, and Arroyo (if resigned) could also be traded if we don't start hot. The bottom line is that we only have a 70 mil payroll and some guys are gonna have to go (look at what the Rays do) the second a player is due to make mega bucks they ship him out for prospects...the Reds need to do the same imo. We cant have Votto, Arroyo, BP, and coco taking over 50% of the payroll. But mark my words...Joey will be gone by the deadline, if not then...certainly after the season.

•The Reds announced that they outrighted Daryl Thompson and Jared Burton off of the 40-man roster. Burton would have been arbitration eligible for the second time and MLBTR projected a salary in the $900K range for the 30-year-old.

Reds Exercise Phillips' Option, Decline Cordero's

    By Ben Nicholson-Smith [October 31, 2011 at 3:45pm CST]

The Reds announced that they exercised Brandon Phillips' 2012 option and declined their option for Francisco Cordero (Twitter link). The Reds will pay Cordero a $1MM buyout instead of a $12MM salary and they'll pay Phillips a $12MM salary instead of a $1MM buyout.

Phillips, 30, hit .300/.353/.457 with 18 homers in 674 plate appearances for Cincinnati in 2011. He has made his desire for an extension clear, stating in September that it would feel like “a slap in my face” if the Reds pick up the option without talking long-term deal. But if the sides do discuss an extension, don't expect a hometown discount "There’s no homeboy hookup. That ain’t going to work," Phillips said.

The Reds discussed an extension for Cordero, a Type A free agent, toward the end of the regular season. MLBTR's Tim Dierkes explained in his recent offseason outlook article that the Reds "can't afford to commit $5MM a year for two more seasons of Cordero."

•Jared Burton elected free agency, according to MLB.com's Mark Sheldon (on Twitter). The 30-year-old right-hander showed promise out of the 'pen in 2007-08, but has appeared in just ten MLB games since 2010. He spent time on the 60-day DL with shoulder inflammation in 2011.
