Glad to see the Reds resign Corky Miller. They might need a veteran catcher at some point next season.

The Cincinnati Reds and Cesar Izturis agreed to a minor-league contract that includes an invitation to Spring Training, reports Mark Sheldon of MLB.com. The 12-year veteran will compete for a bench spot.

I like this signing quite a bit. Izturis is a solid veteran who can play 1B, 2B, 3B, and SS. Makes me wonder if this means the Reds are moving forward without Scott Rolen regardless of whether he plans on playing again.

    Reds Sign Armando Galarraga

    By Ben Nicholson-Smith [January 22, 2013 at 10:03am CST]

The Reds have signed free agent right-hander Armando Galarraga to a minor league contract, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports (on Twitter). SFX represents Galarraga, who turned 31 last week.

Galarraga, who's best known for his near-perfect game in 2010, pitched for the Astros in 2012. He posted a 6.75 ERA with 17 strikeouts and 18 walks in 24 innings for Houston before being removed from the MLB roster in August. He also started ten games at the minor league level, posting a 3.97 ERA in 47 2/3 innings. Galarraga posted a 4.55 ERA in 466 2/3 innings as a member of the Tigers' rotation from 2008-10.

    Reds Sign Jacob Constante

    By Ben Nicholson-Smith [January 22, 2013 at 8:44am CST]

We’ll track the day’s international signings here...
•The Reds signed Dominican left-hander Jacob Constante for $730K, Ben Badler of Baseball America reports. The Reds watched Constante pitch in the International Prospect League All-Star Game last week, when he showed good life on a fastball that registered in the 92-94 mph range. Constante turns 19 in March and has a potentially above-average slider, according to Badler. The prospect's signing marks the biggest bonus for the Reds during the 2012-13 international signing period.

    Reds Sign Miguel Olivo

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [February 1 at 1:26pm CST]

The Reds announced that they signed catcher Miguel Olivo to a minor league contract with an invitation to MLB Spring Training (Twitter link). Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com, who first reported the sides were nearing a deal, reports that the Phillies, Astros and Dodgers also inquired on Olivo (Twitter links).

Olivo, 34, played for the Mariners in 2012, appearing in 87 games. The right-handed hitter posted a .222/.239/.381 batting line with 12 home rune in 323 plate appearances. He hit for more power against left-handers than right-handers last year, which isn't surprising considering his career line of .270/.303/.477 against southpaws.

Agent Martin Arburua represents Olivo, an 11-year MLB veteran, who earned $3.5MM in 2012. He joins a Reds roster that includes Ryan Hanigan and Devin Mesoraco. The free agent market for catchers no longer features many options for interested teams. Rod Barajas, Chris Snyder and Matt Treanor are among the remaining options, as MLBTR's Free Agent Tracker shows.

Like the Miguel Olivo signing for depth at Catcher. I also like the Manny Parra signing as a lefthanded specialist out of the bullpen.
