Yankees donate $500K to tornado relief

The Yankees are donating $500,000 to aid the relief efforts following the devastating tornados that hit the southern United States earlier this week, the team announced on Friday.

Half of the money will go to the Salvation Army, and half to the Red Cross.

"On behalf of the entire New York Yankees organization, we would like to express our deepest condolences to all those affected by the devastating storms in Alabama and throughout the South," said New York Yankees general partner and vice chairperson Jennifer Steinbrenner Swindal. "During the most difficult of times, the resiliency of the American spirit brings people together. We are eager to join so many others in helping to rebuild these proud and vibrant southern communities. In the days, weeks and months ahead, we will continue to keep everyone in our hearts and prayers."

Yankees relief pitcher David Robertson is from Alabama and has family there -- luckily they are OK, but it was a scary situation.

Nice gesture. Get every team to do that and there is $15 million.

I'm glad they gave it to the right people so it gets spent on what it's meant for, unlike most of the money the US got for Katrina. I hope more teams do this as well

Maybe they thought the tornado was the name of a new relief pitcher?

Okay totally joking and that really isn't funny. Good for them and lets hope people follow suit.
