Suspensions: LSU's Mathieu, Ware fail drug test; UGA's Geathers, Williams for fight

Source: Mathieu, Ware suspended for Auburn game. Suspension could be longer

LSU sophomores Spencer Ware and Tyrann Mathieu will be suspended for Saturday's game against Auburn after reportedly failing a drug test, a source told The Daily Reveille on Wednesday.

The suspensions could turn into multiple-game suspensions as well.

Michael Bonnette, LSU's Associate Athletics Director and Sports Information Director, did not comment on the matter, but neither confirmed nor denied the reports, saying he will speak with LSU coach Les Miles this afternoon.

Ware is the Tigers' starting running back and has gained 512 yards as part of a dynamic LSU rushing attack.

Mathieu has garnered widespread Heisman hype after forcing six turnovers and scoring two touchdowns on defense and special teams this season.

As expected, Georgia’s Kwame Geathers and Shawn Williams were handed down half-game suspensions Wednesday for their actions during last Saturday’s game against Vanderbilt. Commodores center Logan Stewart was also levied a half-game suspension.

No word yet from the league office on disciplinary measures, if any, for Vanderbilt coach James Franklin and/or Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham for their actions at the end of the game, won by the Bulldogs 33-28 this past Saturday in Nashville.

Geathers, a redshirt sophomore from Georgetown, S.C., has started at noseguard for the Bulldogs and alternates regularly with junior John Jenkins. He has seven tackles, a pass break-up and a quarterback pressure.

Williams, a junior from Damascus, has started every game this season, including one at inside linebacker. He is the Bulldogs’ third-leading tackler with 34 and has two interceptions, including one against Vanderbilt this past weekend.

Saturday’s game, clinched by Georgia in the final seconds, was extremely emotional. The night ended with Frankin and Grantham in a shouting match at midfield. The SEC asked for reports from both schools about the incident but indicated Wednesday that it is being “handled internally between league office and schools.”

    And another one.
CB Roberson is seventh Gator arrested this year

    Posted on: October 19, 2011 11:34 am

Urban Meyer has moved on. But Florida's penchant for minor arrests has not.

The Orlando Sentinel reported Wednesday that true freshman cornerback Marcus Roberson was arrested and charged with underage alcohol possession Sept. 14, the week of the Gators' game against Tennessee. Roberson was the second Floriday player arrested by the University Police Department that week, following now former Gator linebacker Dee Finley's misdemeanor arrest two days earlier.

Roberson was arrested outside a campus residence hall after police officers reportedly spotted him with a can of Four Loko. He is being represented by Gainesville attorney Huntley Johnson, who (per the Sentinel, in a bit of an understatement) "frequently represents UF athletes." Underage alcohol possession is a misdemeanor charge.

Roberson is the seventh Gator arrested this calendar year and the second to be cited for underage alcohol possession.

Will Muschamp has yet to comment on Roberson's arrest and what punishment, if any, he might receive. Finley was suspended for the Tennessee meeting following his arrest. Roberson has started all seven games for the Gators this season.

Florida has a bye this week but will face Georgia Oct. 29 in Jacksonville, a game for which the reeling Gators will need all hands on the proverbial deck. Freshman or not, a suspension for one of the Gators' steadiest performers at one of their thinnest positiosn would be a major blow for their chances in the Cocktail Party.

Since the beginning of Meyer's tenure? Thirty-five or thirty-six. This is the sixth or seventh for Muschamp I think.

I thought making an example of a marquee player like Janoris Jenkins would have made a difference. So far it hasn't.

Does anyone actually believe they will be suspended for LSU-Alabama?

^ I read somewhere that LSU's policy is a suspension of 15% of all remaining games (1 game, in this case), so I guess timing is everything.

    yawn... arrested for underage drinking

i hope most of you are sensible enough to distinguish that from the real arrests for DUI, assault, battery, et-al.

getting caught doing something you'll be able to do anyway in 2-3 years is not a big deal... i think the vast majority of us have done that (and what tyron did, for that matter) plenty of times in our lives.
