With the first pick, the Pittsburgh Pirates take Anthony Rendon, a third basemen out of Rice University.

With Pedro Alvarez the current third basemen, the Pirates will plan to eventually move Alvarez across the diamond and allow Rendon to take over at third. He isn't too terribly far from being able to reach the big leagues either, with an advanced bat and solid defense, he could rise quickly.

It's expected that Rendon could start the 2012 season in Double A Altoona.

The signing bonus range is said to be in the 6.5-10 million dollar range, which is high for the Pirates, but necessary.

The main reason for taking Rendon is because he is arguably the top talent, and even though this draft is bloated with pitchers, Rendon should have no problem leading the class.

Estimated Peak WAR is between 6.5-7

With the second overall pick, the Seattle Mariners select Gerrit Cole a starting pitcher out of UCLA.

Cole is an extreme talent, and if the Pirates didn't need Alvarez so badly, Cole would have made a perfect fit. Cole could be pitching with Felix Hernandez by as early as 2013.

The former Yankee draft choice is a top end talent, and the M's need to develop in a lot of places, and the rotation is key.

Estimated Peak WAR - Between 6 and 7

Dbacks #3 Selection- Matt Purke TCU

Toss up between George Springer and Purke. Purke has been injured a bit this season but has shown good stuff in his 3 starts. The D-backs will take whoever they think is the best player available and will likely go over slot to fill a pretty weak farm system especially with new management coming in. Right now it is looking like it is Matt Purke

    Est Signing bonus: $4-5 million

O's are thrilled that the D'Backs took Purke and take George Springer, out of the University of Connecticut, the same university VRP723 is currently attending.

The kid really has it all, he can hit for power, contact and plays a great outfield. Also, he seems to have a good head on his shoulders for a top draft pick. In an organization filled with young pitchers, a college bat that could be playing in the majors as soon as 2012 seems like a slam dunk.

    MLB Comparison - Andrew McCutchen
