Coyotes defenseman Ed Jovanovski, recovering from orbital-bone surgery, skated Tuesday for the first time since suffering the injury Feb. 18.

He seemed a bit bemused wearing a Plexiglas shield, the first time since juniors he has worn one.

"It was good to get back out there," he said. "I didn't stay out there much, 15, 20 minutes, but it was good to get the skates back on the first day, and we'll see it progress."

He remains optimistic he can return before the end of the season.

Jovanovski's injury spurred the Coyotes to obtain Rostislav Klesla at the trade deadline.

"I think right now it's getting everything to heal," he said. "They put a timetable on it, four to six weeks to begin with, I don't know, will it be earlier? With the training staff here, the doctors we have here definitely are not going to put you in a position where you jeopardize your vision or anything like that.

"I've got the utmost trust in the staff here; let them make the decision on when they feel it's time to make that next step."
