What was the reason that the Pistons traded Prime Grant Hill in 2000 at 27 years old?

August 3, 2000: Traded by the Detroit Pistons to the Orlando Magic for Chucky Atkins and Ben Wallace.

If I'm not mistaken this was before the Birds Rights. Plus Grant Hill wanted to leave because he thought Tim Duncan was joining the Magic as well because they had the most cap that summer.

How can it be before Bird Rights? Bird Rights are AKA "Larry Bird Rule".

^^ from what i've read just now jogging the brain, the pistons were a middling contender and hill was ready to opt out in free agency. the pistons wanted to get something for him, and actually did for once.

was he somewhat injury prone at that point?
also at the time, ben wallace hasn't shown much of his DPOY talent yet...

Something about the team and its fanbase turning their back on him and thinking he was milking injuries that werent that severe, when in reality he played when he should have sat. Im prolly wrong but I cant remember the specifics. SteveNash aka Trophico would know
Yo Kobe, get at me bro, we'd have a good time, man

If I remember correcly, he and Dumars had a good relationship and he asked Joe to move him. I took it as him needing a change of scenery. Maybe he felt like Detroit fans had given up on him.

I'd say it worked out pretty well for Detroit. Especially if Hill wasn't gonna resign.

Yeah I'd say 50+ wins a year for most of the next decade, an NBA championship, and another appearance made it a good trade

A front offices job is to make a team into a winner both today and in the future. The front office made the move they had to become a winner.

It was a sign and trade. One could argue that if the Pistons did not make that deal, they would have never won a title and appeared in so many other finals/conference finals.
