The Calgary Flames have a new center.

Veteran Brendan Morrison, who played for the Washington Capitals last season, has signed a contract with the Flames, the team announced on Monday.

The 35-year-old native of Pitt Meadows was recently on a professional tryout contract with Vancouver but was released on Sunday.

That gave the Flames a chance to sign Morrison to shore up the centre position which is currently hit by injuries to Daymond Langkow (neck), Matt Stajan (shoulder), Ryan Stone (knee) and David Moss (shoulder). All four players are listed as indefinite with their injuries.

Morrison has played with the New Jersey Devils, the Vancouver Canucks, the Anaheim Ducks, the Dallas stars and, most recently, with the Washington Capitals.

In 829 NHL games he has 187 goals and 360 assists for 547 points. With the Caps last season he had 42 points, including 12 goals in 74 games.

Brendan Morrison wasn't out of a job for long.

After being released by the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday, the 35-year old signed a one-year, one-way contract with the Canucks' divisional rivals the Calgary Flames on Monday. The deal is worth $725,000.

Morrison, a native of Pitt Meadows, B.C., had 12 goals and 30 assists in 74 games with the Washington Capitals last season, but was unable to find a contract in the off-season. He attended Canucks' camp on a tryout basis and had a solid pre-season, but he balked at the notion of a two-way contract.

In 829 regular season games split between the Canucks, Ducks, Stars and Capitals, Morrison has 187 goals and 360 assists.

The Flames have been looking to add a centre after a rash of injuries struck them down the middle. Daymond Langkow, Matt Stajan and David Moss are all expected to miss time, while Olli Jokinen just returned from a back muscle injury. Morrison should add some veteran experience and play-making ability and may well work his way on to one of the Flames' top two lines.

Ah, whatever with this one. It's better than old man Conroy on the third line. He can always go down through waivers when the rest come back from injury.
