TORONTO -- The Manitoba Moose will not have defenceman Lee Sweatt and Chris Tanev back in time for weekend games in Rochester and Toronto as the duo will remain with the Vancouver Canucks throughout the NHL all-star break.

The Moose, who face the Rochester Americans today (6:35 p.m., CJOB) and the Toronto Marlies on Saturday, were poised to receive Sweatt at the very least and potentially Tanev but continued injury trouble on the Canucks blue-line will prevent either from an immediate return.

The Canucks announced Thursday that Alex Edler will undergo back surgery and with fellow defencemen Aaron Rome, Sami Salo and Andrew Alberts still unavailable Tanev and Sweatt will remain with the Canucks.

The Moose head into the weekend action sitting second in the North Division with a 25-13-1-5 record for 56 points, three back of the division leading Hamilton Bulldogs.

The Moose fell 3-0 to the Bulldogs on Wednesday in a game much tighter than the final score.

"That was a playoff game. Both teams playing for first place and it was more of a 1-0 game than a 3-0 game. That was a good game for us to play in and learn from," said Moose coach Claude Noel. "The difference in these games is in the details, the faceoffs and board battles. It can teach us to be an elite team. An elite team finds a way to win games like that."

The Moose will now face a different challenge in the last-place Americans. There's no room for a slip-up against a weak opponent if the Moose want to stay near the top of the standings.

"We have to put that game behind us and get ready for Rochester. That's part of managing the game. In the playoffs if you lose a game you have to be ready to go the next night," said Noel. "We want first place and we have to continue to battle."

February can be a tough month for a professional hockey player but Noel says his group can't afford any mid-winter blues.

"The dark days of February are there but if you're going to be an elite team you have to move past that," said Noel. "The games now are fun and they're about growth. There's another level of learning. We haven't faced a whole lot of adversity but it's coming. We'll see if we can handle that and be able to go to the well down the stretch."

Speculation about where the Vancouver Canucks American Hockey League affiliate will land should the NHL move back to Winnipeg is sure to pick up today.

CKNW has reported that talks are underway about possibly moving the Calgary Flames affiliate from Abbotsford to Chilliwack, citing a deal to move the WHL Bruins to Victoria, which is reportedly 70 per cent complete.

It was also reported that talks have also begun about the prospect of moving the Canucks affiliate to Abbotsford, as the NHL looms closer to having to relocate the moribund Phoenix Coyotes franchise to Winnipeg, current home of the AHL Moose.

The Abbotsford Heat are in the second year of a 10-year deal with the Flames.

The Canucks affiliate has been the biggest draw in terms of attendance at Heat games.

In eight regular season meetings between the Heat and Moose at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre, the average fan attendance has been slightly more than 6,394. That's compared to the Heat's overall average attendance records of 3,797.

CHL: CSKA wants to return to Filatov and Shirokova

For 20-year-old Filatov this season in Columbus 'frankly do not specify - in 23 appearances for the Blue Jackets' power forward in the account of 7 (0 +7) points. Filatov does not shine in farm-club - Springfield, where he had after 32 games 17 (8 +9) points for performance. 25-year Shirokov once again failed to gain a foothold in "Vancouver", but rather productive playing in the AHL club, "Manitoba Moose," which in 73 games scored 55 (21 +34) points.

It is worth recalling that in Filatov sezone-2009/10 along with Albert Leshchev became chief joker army, and a wide two years ago after refusing to leave CSKA guide red and blue meet the contractual requirements of the player.

In addition, according to the Swedish Expressen, CSKA Moscow reached an agreement to move the team 32 year old striker Nicklas Persson, who for two seasons in "Naftokhimik" had 108 matches and scored 58 (17 +41) points.

So Duco is called up. Bitz is healthy. Mancari can't get it figured out at the NHL level. Hmmmm. What do we have in the way of blue chippers these days?

Basically were banking on the Sedin's being able to keep this up for 10+ years.
