    Music Geniuses

I just wanted to start a discussion of who you consider to be geniuses in music history. I know the term gets thrown around a lot, so please don't just name the lead singer of you favorite group.

I always thought of Jimmy Page as a music genius. I feel like his contributions to Led Zeppelin tracks and the way they were produced are the main reason why they're so great. Another guy I think of being a music genius is Roger Waters. Pink Floyd was really the same without him (though I love David Gilmour's guitar work).

On the hip-hop side, I immediately point to Dr Dre. He was a such a damn good producer who made careers for so many guys. Same with RZA. The production he did for the Wu-Tang Clan albums, and on the all their early solo albums, and affiliate's albums, is so unique and critically good. Not to mention he was a solid lyricist. I feel like Outkast deserve a mention too. Their first 3 albums are some of my favourites.

... The Beatles (all of them?), Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Jimi, Morrison? Axl Rose? Billy Corgan? James Hettfield? Neil Young?

    Lets get the discussion going

Townshend is the guy who leaps to mind immediately. Genius is a rather elite term. I'd suggest that the majority of the names already suggested do not qualify.

I def wouldn't have Dr. Dre on my list. Tough question though.

    Lennon/McCartney
    Hendrix

Not 100% on any of those even but they were the first to come to mind.

I only really got into a handful of Who songs, so I was a little surprised to see Townshend. I had no idea he wrote so much stuff.

How the hell can you guys leave out Brian Wilson? Crazy Genius. Pet Sounds is all him and created it when he was still in his 20's. Without that album you wouldn't have Beatles Sgt. Peppers which was their answer to it.

Hendricks and Eddie Van Halen. I mean nobody sounds or plays the guitar like these two.

    BB King, Johnny Cash.

As others have said Rick Rubin. No producer spans musical variety like him. He's insanely talented and still going strong for 35 years. He's absurd.

And of course Bowie. His impact on music landscape will never ever be equaled. Nobody used Music and Visual medium with such bravado. Way, way, way ahead of his time.

How about the combo of Elton John and Bernie Taupin. Nobody writes like Bernie and nobody nails his songs and sings like Elton John. And they been churning out classics for 48 years!

Modern times Kayne West is up there. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is crazy creative and a masterpiece.

Yeah, Brian Wilson and Elton John for sure. Could also throw in guys like Stephen Sondheim, Richard Rogers, Oscar Hammerstein, George Gershwin, and Frank Zappa.
