As bad as it sounds, and as unfortunate as it may be, that is probably a legitimate reason as to why there has been less than stellar success on the field.

The higher academic standards may hurt a little bit, but the Florida, Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Alabama teams have high scores.

Honestly, I'm baffled by the ACC's problem. There are great coaches and great players. It is almost as if it is too even among the teams.

This is also a flawed study. It's a reflection of the coach, not the team, as it calculates the coaches ability to retain players at their current school and previous schools since 2009. So someone like Sweeney, the scores are only for his 08 and 09 seasons, I believe, maybe only 09, since he split the 08 season with Bowden. And someone like Mike London or Paul Johnson have scores from their previous scores during that time too.

And retention doesn't mean that the players are smart, it just means that they come back to school based on their scholarship.

    Only because Beamer is 67th.

Do you really think that is the reason for my post? Pretty pathetic on your part if you believe that and I'll assume that you didn't even read your own link and just looked at the rankings.

You're right, it is more of a reflection on the coach than the school. I never said that. That being said, Dabo's number is high because players rarely leave Clemson early. Even guys like Spiller and Ford chose to stay and play their senior year. Plus, the academic standards at Clemson are at a happy medium where you keep the idiots out (and send them to USCjr.), while allowing for adequate academic progress.

His number is high because Spiller and Ford came back. He hasn't had any other years for guys to leave early since he has only coached for less than two years. Clemson is a good school, but it is on the same level as VT as a university. Even very good schools like UF have problems on their team because of lax recruiting standards, so the school itself doesn't necessarily keep out bad seeds.

But it judges on academic progress, and with the way Florida recruits, they aren't going to have much of that.

It's called academic progress to fool people into thinking that there really is progress at these schools, but its all about eligibility and retention of scholarships. All that means is that kids have to stay in school and stay on track to keep their scholarship. This has nothing to do with "academic progress" among football players.

In 2003, the NCAA created the APR to monitor academic progress at its member institutions. The APR is basically a formula that measures semester-by-semester academic progress based on the eligibility and retention of each scholarship student-athlete.
From the same article you provided.

Yes semester-by-semester for the retention and eligibility for scholarship money. Scholarship money, like tuition, is set up for a semester-by-semester basis.
