    Steve Carell leaving the Office

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Actor Steve Carell is tendering his resignation as the egotistical boss Michael Scott of "The Office", and leaving the hit TV comedy show next year.

Carell told Us Magazine that he would be leaving paper company Dunder Mifflin at the end of the upcoming TV season, in May 2011.

"Yes, it will be my last," Carell, 47, told UsMagazine.com while promoting his movie "Despicable Me". "It's the last (season) on my contract, and I want to honor my contract."

Carell, who won a Golden Globe award for his role, said he wanted to spend more time with his wife and two young children.

Carell began playing Michael Scott in 2005 when the U.S. version of the hit British mockumentary created by Ricky Gervais was launched on NBC.

NBC had no comment on Carell's remarks.

Carell's departure may not mean the end of "The Office" however. NBC executives told reporters in May that the network regarded the show as an ensemble piece and that producers were prepared for a possible departure by Carell.

The actor told Us Magazine he would be sad to leave the comedy series. "These are some of my best friends in the world! But it will be good -- it will be good for everybody," he said.

"The Office" has been one of NBC's biggest critical hits, winning an Emmy for best comedy series, and a Screen Actors Guild Award for its ensemble cast. The series has also been sold widely overseas.

They should probably go ahead and end the show anyway, it's gotten worse and worse these last few years.

Heard this a while back. For me, the show kind of a fell off a bit this year anyway. It's too bad though, because I love the characters on the show.

Well... the Office has sucked for a while now, so hopefully this is the beginning of the end.

End the show with his departure (getting fired would be classic), and I'll be happy.

Who could possibly take his place if the show kept going? I'm with G4L, end the show with his departure.

They likely won't just end it unless its ratings take a major dive in 2010-11. It's the one show on their Thursday night block that actually holds decent ratings on its own (30 Rick is getting better but it's not great and Community and P&R are abysmal).

I don't watch parks and rec but its pretty good. Great cast on that show, but I can't watch it because it reminds me of The Office too much.

They might as well end the show when Carrell goes. He, more or less, is that show.
With the deepest of regrets I am announcing that I will be leaving Pro Sports Daily. No reason in particular but wanted to thank everyone for a great 6 years here. Lots of great discussion and good poll series as well. Also fun re-drafts. Best of luck to you all in the future.

Oh I wasn't talking about the quality of those shows Parks and Rec is my favorite comedy on TV. Just ratings-wise, it's really bad.
