Remember this when Drafting a Rush 3-4 OLB

I remember reading somewere about (3-4 rushing OLB's) that the key numbers to look at are the CONE DRILL and not so much there 40.... Take a look at the numbers, the top rated OLB's ranked these past few years.... (??? mean they didnt run the cone drill in the combine)......

    2009
    1.Aaron Curry....40/4.52....Cone/7.15
    2.Brian Cushing....40/4.64....Cone/6.84
    3.Clay Matthews....40/4.62....Cone/6.90
    4.Larry English.....40/4.82....Cone/7.26
    5.Clint Sintim.....40/4.75....Cone/7.37

    2008
    1.Vernon Gholston....40/4.65....Cone/7.12
    2.Keith Rivers.....40/4.58.....Cone/????
    3.Cliff Avril....40/4.51.....Cone/6.90
    4.Xavier Adibi....40/4.69.....Cone/????
    5.Erin Henderson....40/4.73....Cone/7.16

    2007
    1.Paul Posluszny....40/4.70.....Cone/6.94
    2.Jon Beason....40/4.72.......Cone/????
    3.Lawrence Timmons.....40/4.66.....Cone/6.92
    4.LaMarr Woodley.....40/4.74......Cone/????
    5.Quentin Moses.....40/4.74......Cone/7.38

    2006
    1.A.J. Hawk.....40/4.59.....Cone/6.82
    2.Kamerion Wimbley.....40/4.61.....Cone/6.98
    3.Chad Greenway......40/4.76.....Cone/7.01
    4.Ernie Sims.....40/4.50.....Cone/7.32
    5.Bobby Carpenter.....40/4.65.....Cone/???

    2005
    1.Derrick Johnson....40/4.52.....Cone/7.21
    2.DeMarcus Ware....40/4.56......Cone/6.85
    3.Kevin Burnett.....40/4.61......Cone/????
    4.Justin Tuck.....40/4.73......Cone/????5.Darryl Blackstock.....40/4.70.....Cone/7.05

I wonder if this is why Bill hasn't picked his OLB yet for this team beacause A. Clay Matthews was looked at as a one year wonder and he only started like 7 games as a senior B. There hasnt really been too many GOOD or Great OLB prospects to fall to us these past few years....

Now here are this years OLB prospects

    2010
    1Derrick Morgan....40/4.77....Cone/7.12
    2.Brandon Graham ....40/4.71....Cone/???
    3.Sergio Kindle.....40/4.65....Cone/7.26
    4..Jason Pierre-Paul....40/4.71.....Cone/7.18
    5.Jerry Hughes .....40/4.65.....Cone/6.99
    6.Sean Weatherspoon.... 40/4.62....Cone/6.99
    7.Daryl Washington .....40/4.58....Cone???
    8.Thaddeus Gibson.....40/4.78........Cone/6.84
    9.Eric Norwood .....40/4.71.....Cone/7.08
    10.Jason Worilds .....40/4.65.....Cone/6.95
    11.Koa Misi ......40/4.75......Cone/7.07
    12.Ricky Sapp ....40/4.65.....Cone/7.29

Looking at these numbers I would only take a chance on Brandon Graham and also Thaddeus Gibson....(But thats just me)

So it seem that if you have great EXPLOSION off the line the cone drill would show in the numbers.... Anything under 6.87 is STAR POTENTIAL....6.90's is GOOD......Anything over that seems to be a gamble!!

nice post, i still hope that cliff avril trade goes down after the draft, his numbers are solid and everyone knows he's not in the right scheme.

But there's not much to love out of this years OLB prospects compared to last year.

Nice post. Would take a chance on Weatherspoon, hypothetically speaking?

I'd like too, but I'm not sure many people would.

Weatherspoon is 4-3 suited, not sure how he'd do as an OLB in a 3-4 but i love his coverage skills

To me, and from what I have seen he is the best LB in this draft. But he would play ILB in a 3-4 becouse he has those coverge skills. So we really don't have a need for him. Rather go after one of the high DE and try and make them play OLB.

agreed, but it sure would be nice to have him, love his character, i'd easily replace crowder with him, could be a real nice ILB core for years

Very good post. I knew this before too (to look at the Cone drill and not the 40 yard time) but its fantastic to see it in writing with real life examples...

They were saying the same thing on the NFL network the other week...

Im sure given the Trifecta drafted Ware, they'll look for a similar caliber player with a similar toolset. I can't WAIT for the draft!!! Bring it on boys!
