Is Jeter great or does Ozzy Smith stink?

Ozzy 'The Wizard' Smith who many consider one of the best fielding shortstops of all time has a lifetime fielding percentage of .978.

Jeter has a lifetime percentage of .976.

If Jeter is one of the worst as some say then you can put Ozzie right there with him. However if Ozzie really was great then Derek is right there with him.

You can't have it both ways.

I'm curious how many more errors Smith may have had because of his range.

    Food for thought.

FLDG % is a very poor way to account for defense. It doesn't TRULY represent a player's defensive skills.

Ozzie ran circles around most SS in the field, and it resulted in more balls reached and thus a lower FP.

So yeah, you can have it both ways.

I can say without a shadow of a doubt Ozzie Smith was a better defender than Jeter.

Using fielding percentage to prove the defensive capabilities of a defender? Is this a joke?

Ozzie was a better defender, no doubt. Fielding percentage or not.

Ozzie had much more range than Jeter has ever shown.

Jeter is very solid, but doesn't cover as much space as most MLB SS's.

Now, I'm a Phillies fan, so I'll plead ignorance when it comes to watching the Yankees all day all night here, but didn't Jeter have great range back in his prime?

Back in those days where he used to make the back-handed running stop and throw mid-air, like we as kids used to emulate. Was he that good, or just blown up by the media?

Also, just to throw into the conversation when it comes to Ozzie v.s Jeter. It's not even close man, no one can touch the Wizard.

He woulda been ****ed in Washington...
Update: Turns out he was ****ed in Kansas City too

Jeter is good but he is no where near as good defensively as Ozzie was.

For the original poster, to put it simply, there's more to being a good defender than simply avoiding errors, which is all fielding % measures.
