Here's the article again:
Sources tell TSN the NHL and the NHLPA are investigating what might have been an enormous mistake by the Chicago Blackhawks.
Chicago tendered qualifying offers to several key players this week, including Kris Versteeg, Cam Barker, Ben Eager, Colin Fraser, Aaron Johnson and Troy Brouwer, however the investigation underway is to determiner whether the qualifying offers were filed correctly.
If not, there is the remote possibility the qualifying offers could be ruled invalid and the players listed above, conceivably, could be deemed unrestricted free agents because of the blunder.
There are few details, but one source says the players involved didn't receive the necessary notification of the offers.
The National Hockey League is in the process of trying to determine whether the situation was remedied in time.
Chicago general manager Dale Tallon says the qualifying offers were mailed to the players in time, on June 29th, but says because of the July 1 holiday, some of the players didn't receive them in time.
Tallon says fax copies of the offers were sent to the league, so he doesn't anticipate any significant fall out.

I think we were interested in Barker and Versteeg

if we end up signing barker and versteeg, we'd be set. Signign Barker would be awesome, we wouldn't have to overpay for kaberle if that were to happen.

Cam Barker would be the only one. his cap hit for last year was 2.7million but i dont know if thats his base or the total with bonuses. if he becomes a free agent which i dont think they will i could see us going after him. i also believe Gillis would make a possible RFA offer for him as the hawks have little cap room with quite a few players to sign.
Does anyone know anything about RFA compensation? I know if you offer someone over a certain amount it starts costing you first round draft picks...

http://www.nhlscap.com/offer_sheets.htm-- WHAT IS THE COMPENSATION REQUIRED FOR SIGNING A RFA TO AN OFFER SHEET?
For 2008-09, the compensation due for signing a RFA to an Offer Sheet is:
$863,156 or less - none
$863,156 - $1,307,812 - 3rd round pick
$1,307,812 - $2,615,625 - 2nd round pick
$2,615,623 - $3,923,437 - 1st and 3rd round pick
$3,923,437 - $5,231,249 - 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round pick
$5,231,249 - $6,539,062 - two 1st's, one 2nd, and one 3rd round pick
$6,539,062 or more - 4 1st round picks
The amount is determined by taking the total compensation due in the Offer Sheet, and dividing by the number of years specified in the Offer Sheet, or five (5) - whichever is less.

One of our local TV stations reported that the proper paperwork was filed correctly and on time for at least two of the our RFA's.
