I don't have an account so I can't actually read anything, but a headline on ESPN Insider was "Oh look, Red Wings better now" and the only thing I could see in there was that "Mike Grier heading home".

Sooo this could all be major speculation coming from the inaccessible ESPN Rumors page, but it looks like the Wings are trying to sign Mike Grier.

Winging it in Motown's Christopher Hollis delivered a bombshell of the pleasant "it's who you know" variety via unrestricted free agent winger Mike Grier's agent, Jay Fee:

July 27, Winging it in Motown: "Several teams have contacted me as they see Mike as a very solid asset and a plus for their organization. Detroit is a first class organization in which Mike has expressed interest. I believe the Red Wings respect Mike as a player and true professional. We'll have to see where it goes from here."

Grier was banged-up for a chunk of the 08-09 season, but the 34-year-old right winger, born in Detroit and raised in Boston, remains a big (6'1," 225 lbs.), gritty and defensively responsible winger who will occasionally drop the gloves if necessary, and, mostly...He's a solid citizen who's a leader both on and off the ice.

He does come with a, "San Jose Sharks fans say he 'looked slow' while battling knee and "lower-body" injuries last season" warning, and if he wants to come to Detroit, he'd have to take a huge discount off his $1.775 million salary from this past season. I guess, "We'll have to see where it goes from here," to quote Mr. Fee.

Ahhh solid. Thank you. There is a new thing up there now saying something about how they can replace 88 goals (Hossa, Hudler, Samuelsson). Of course I can't read it and there is NO CHANCE I am spending $35 just to read it.

Not exactly a home town discount for Chicago and Marc Savard's deal look amazing right now, but they got the deals done. Hawks have gotta move somebody within the next 24 hours or so I believe.

Unsigned: 7 RFA, 4 UFA. None of these will sign for the league minimum. Especially Ladd, Eager, Burish, Hjalmarsson and Neimi.

Also note that their current roster is already over the cap by 4.6 million without accounting for these three new raises.

The Hawks are going to lose significant depth. I just don't see how they'll be able to retain Ladd, Eager, Burish, Hjalmarsson or Neimi. That's especially important to remember when they can only offer league minimum contracts AND are still over the cap. Hell, they're over the cap without the 5-7 players they have to sign.

But it pretty much sums up what kind of cap situation the hawks are going to be in next season. Im extremely interested to see how it's going to work.

looks like Leino, May and Lebda could be moved very soon. They got to clear money for the return of Franzen (next tuesday!)

Not Leino! Wish he wasn't slumping this year, looked so promising last year... really wanted to see him develop and be in the next set of wings to sign long contracts.

Leino's problem is that he isn't working like he has to earn a spot every night. He has played so lackadaisically this year it is amazing. I think he caught a case of being a highly anticipated addition, that he thought he could relax instead of working harder. I know Babcock won't stand for it and that's why he has been a healthy scratch the last 6 games. Disappointing....
