My guess is they bump his title to assistant head coach to get him away, no other reason that Miss State would let Collins leave for a job in the same conference.

New Florida head coach Jim McElwain has reached out to Mississippi State's Geoff Collins and reportedly plans to hire him as the Gators' defensive coordinator.

Though an agreement has not been finalized, Sports Illustrated is reporting that Collins, the Bulldogs defensive coordinator for the last four seasons, "is expected to accept the same position at Florida." ESPN's Joe Schad notes that the deal will be for three years.

Mississippi State ranked in the top 10 nationally in points per game allowed (19.4) in 2014. Defensive end Preston Smith and linebacker Bernardrick McKinney (Collins also coaches the linebackers) were both first team all-conference selections by the SEC coaches.

D.J. Durkin, Florida's defensive coordinator under Will Muschamp, has continued to work with the Gators as the team's interim head coach as the team prepares for the Birmingham Bowl against East Carolina.
