man, I hope its not with the cubs. I doubt the Cubs try and get peavy or any other starter if dempster signs...and I am not sold on him being some elite pitcher. I think he had 1 good year and I don't think that is enough to invest in a pitcher for 4+ years.

Any pitcher signed to more than 3 years via the FA market is just asking for trouble.

2 picks coming back, plus the 2 from Howry, plus the 2 from Wood gives us 6 sandwich picks this season. Thats how you start building a minor league system.

Plus, it's going to allow the Cubs to make deals including guys like, Jose Ceda, and whatnot.

AKA a trade for Jake Peavy and deal 4 prospects, we'll still have some extras.

There's like 60 rounds of baseball picks as it is what good is 6 more?
You're just as likely to get a star in the 20th round as in the 1st round.
Plus you have to offer arbitration to get the picks and I'm not so sure they are going to offer to Howry

I heard the Levine thing, and they mentioned Dempster will make his decision on the Cubs offer in the next few days. I assume this is the Cubs final offer(4y at 50-52m), and he will either sign or reject it. If Dempster does sign I would assume they would be less interested in Peavy, but If Demspter signs elsewhere the Cubs could work a little harder to get a deal done.

I'd just assume sign 6 dominican 16 year olds instead of making the picks.

There are lots and lots of surprises, but I wouldn't go quite that far.

watch him blow up with the cubs his first year on a 4 year deal. It make us all take crying to a whole new level.

People want Dempster for 4+ years...insane. I would try my very very best to never sign a pitcher to more than 3 years if I were a GM. It would be hard to do...but anything over 3 years is a disaster waiting to happen.

Might need to update the thread title.
Did levine say dempster WILL sign or will make a DECISION soon?

Look at the first round + sanwich picks in the past ten years and how many of them even made it to the major leagues? 40% if that?

    1 year...

could have been a fluke...probably won't be the norm over a 4 year deal.

a deal like that has regret written all over it.

They're called sandwich picks for a reason. You get picks in between the 1st and the 2nd round.

And no. You're not "as likely" to get a star in the 20th as the first. You're far more likely to get a star in the beginning of the draft than the end. Does it happen you get guys at the end? Sure thing. Happens in the NFL too. Doesn't mean the Bears should go out and trade their 1st rounder for 9 7th round picks.

If the Cubs accumulate picks high in the draft for these guys, you will build up a minor league system.
