Meszaros' agent optimistic deal can be struck before camp begins

While the 22-year-old blueliner fully intends to sign a deal with Ottawa and report for duty on Sept. 16 for medicals at Scotiabank Place, the two sides still have a bridge to gap in contract negotiations to ensure that Meszaros is going to be at training camp.

Though the collective bargaining agreement doesn't stop a player from going to camp without a contract, there are insurance issues -- but that's not a decision Meszaros would have to make until just before players are required to report next month.

"Right now, asking me if he's going to be in training camp, the only answer I can give is I'm not sure. But we've still got a lot of time and we're fully focused on trying to get a deal done," said Meszaros' agent, Gerry Johansson.

Yeah, true, eh? Meszaros is the only proven NHL-calibre PP QB we have in Ottawa. Brendan Bell? Good offensively, I wouldn't run a PP through him though. Lawrence Nycholat? Proven at the AHL level, he might surprise some. Brian Lee? In the future, yes, but he needs a year or two IMO. Thoughts?

It's true. When Meszaros was not playing with Redden, he was a stud in the making. This year, when they were together, Meszaros picked up all of Redden's bad habits, and looked lost.

That's exactly the problem, he's asking for just under $4 million. He's using Matt Carle as a comparable, who, in the next 3 years, is making $3.5, $3.5, $3.8. His agent thinks he'll be at training camp though, which is good news.

i think we should only give him that much money in the contract if he signs a 4 or more year contract. Personally i think that with redden gone he will become a stud and his contract will look liike a bargain
