McCain Receives Nearly $2k per Month in Social Security; Says The System is Broken

It is a P.R. mistake for McCain to accept Social Security. If you're looking for an honorable man CubsGirl, try Warren Buffet who will not accept Social security benefits. Fact is, you only get Social security by applying for it. So while McCain whines about the system being broken, he stood in line like everybody else to get his money.

And why shouldn't he? It's his money and therein lies the rub. Social Security should be means tested. I've long advocated for the Moynihan/Nixon plan of a Guaranteed Minimum Income and Benefit Plan or GIMME.

Initiated by Patrick Moynihan (D-NY) and endorsed by President Richard Nixon, GIMME would amalgamate all our social welfare programs, SSI, food stamps, AFDC etc, into one plan that gave everybody a minimum income above the poverty line and a basic health plan.

GIMME was to be means tested and people weaned off the system during their peak earning years of 25-65 and then put back on in retirement. Among the societal benefits is an end to poverty as we know it and a softening on the bust side of the business cycle because minimum consumer spending would always be above the poverty level.

Nothing would invigorate our waning industrial base more and restore the auto industry for example than relieving the corporations of the costs of medical coverage and defined benefit retirement plans.

Is it a liberal or socialist idea? Bloody right it is. Is it corporate welfare? NO, it is providing for the general welfare which is exactly the federal gubment's constitutional mandate.

its a knock b/c the man raised taxes about 100 times while being a senator in illinois. So its like he's going against what he stands for i guess. If he loves taking money from taxpayers so much, then shouldnt he pay his share to instead of puting 1 million in tax free bonds and deducting good will from his taxes?

So by that same token, President Bush should be evading his taxes?

Looking through that "nice link:"

1. Quoting Tucker Bounds or Rich Karlgaard is meaningless.

2. McCain wants to tax pollution as well. In fact they both have the same cap and trade plan.

3. Windfall profit tax is completely a political ploy. It's something that would never happen. The Left uses that to get the poor to think that they're going to get to take on the big evil corporations. Similarly the right talks about repealing the Federal gas tax. Something else that won't happen. Neither one would help at all.

4. Payroll tax -- if you remove the current cap, that solves the Social Security problem.

5. They got the facts wrong. Herbert Hoover only raised taxes when it became clear that his laissez faire strategy had failed completely and some government intervention was needed (FDR built on that). According to John M. Keynes, who analyzed that period of history, for every government dollar spent, it added about $5 to our GDP. For every tax dollar collected, it lowered GDP by $2.80.

6. Voting against extending the Bush Tax Cuts is not the same thing as voting to raise taxes. Especially when yoru proposal does the Bush Tax Cuts one better for the bottom 4 quintiles. But since this is a rightwing news site, I wouldn't expect anything less.

7. The rest of it has to do with the State of Illinois and I don't know anything about Illinois Legislature.

Of course, if that were me, I would probably do the same thing, but still, I think it'd be smarter for him to take a stance more like "I get Social Security checks, but I don't cash them because our system is broken." Just my two cents.
