Rich people should not be able to collect social security. I believe that was even part of George W.'s plan that conservatives didn't like.

No reason the system should be getting sucked dry by those who aren't even close to needing it. Yes they paid into it, but with the system struggling, there's one way in fixing it.

To destroy this invisible government, to dissolve the unholy alliance between corrupt business and corrupt politics is the first task of the statesmanship of the day.-Theodore Roosevelt

This thread is crazy. Of course the system is broken. It's broken, because I, a 26 yr old, will have no money there for me when it's my turn to get benefits when I'm of age without a major bailout/over hall or whatever you'd like to call it to the system.

Or simply removing the cap on payroll taxes so that everyone pays for social security.

So you are eliminating the link between what you pay in and what you get out. I don't want to put in more than I share and I don't think its fair to require that.

No, I think you're misunderstanding me.

Right now, when you collect social security it's based off of the total amount of money that you earned while working. The amount that you pay in is based off of the first $100,000 or so that you earn while working each year.

So someone who averages $250,000 a year while working will get a much larger payout than someone who earns $125,000 each year -- yet they both pay in the same exact amount.

    I don't think that's really fair.

Lifting the cap would solve the problem.

Right, and I don't know all the details of how SS works, so I'm only going of my understanding here.... but the benefits are capped at some level right? I mean Alex Rodriguez isn't going to be getting SS checks for 10K a month right? At some point, if you don't have any cap, you will have people putting in more money than they are going to get out, right? I don't know where that level is, but that is my understanding.

No under the increase, if the inputs are never capped, then the benefits are never capped either. Play it fair on both sides.

Right now it's tilted towards the top end -- where the people don't really even need SS anyway. For instance, if you average $1,000,000 in earnings the last 10 years of your working career, you'll get $65K each year from SS.

As far as A-Rod goes, since he won't be 55-65 when he quits baseball, his huge salary won't factor into his benefits payment.

The benefit you receive is based on the income you received between the ages of 55 and 65.
